Anyone have a brown rice to recommend?

I'm (very) slowly trying to change our diet to healthier options.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a good brown rice that doesn't have the taste/texture of sawdust?  We had some at a Thai restaurant the other day that was really good and didn't look like traditional brown rice (bigger grains, maybe?)but I forgot to ask them for the brand.

Does jackieo still lurk?  Come help me, board dietician!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

I love brown rice... and haven't minded the texture/taste so I don't think I have any suggestions as I buy whatever is available at the store.

I've heard that if you soak it beforehand it might cook easier? I bet Trader Joes might have some different varities though.

  • I haven't done this with rice yet, just quinoa, but I'm sure it would work. I like to cook it in low sodium broth, either vegetable or chicken. That will at least give the rice some flavor. I like to add spices and maybe some chopped up veggies too.

Oh, this sounds like a great idea, I'm going to try that.  Sometimes we mix brown with jasmine or wild rice.  The texture of brown rice doesn't bother me, but sometimes DH isn't the biggest fan.

Lundberg's Countrywild Wild Brown Rice....it comes in a bag (orange label) and it is incredible. I cook it with low sodium chicken broth and the smell alone makes me hungry.  It's delicious!

I'm still here! I haven't been on much since I've been so busy with this internship but I definitely need to come out and play more often! As far as brown rice goes...I don't really have any brand that I love. I've tried so many because a lot of them just look like a pile of mush when they're cooked or taste really bad. I like to use brown texmati rice sometimes- I think the brand is called Rice Select- it comes in one of those plastic jars instead of in a bag. The brown rice you can scoop yourself at Whole Foods isn't too bad either for texture but it doesn't have the flavor that the texmati brown rice does so I usually cook it with half water, half low sodium broth or season it with mrs dash or something. Sorry I'm probably not that helpful! :)

  • Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone.  Guess I'll be going the trial and error route!  Where's a landslide decision when you want one? :)

And hi, jackieo!  Hope you're enjoying the internship, but definitely try to come out and play when you can.

  • I boil my brown rice in chicken broth. i use the low sodium, fat free stuff. It's so much more tasty than just cooking it in water.
