This is a good one.. someone posted this on 9-12 the other day and it was a lot of fun!
So, what was your first car? And how many cars have you had?
I was prob the only person in HS not to have a car.. ugh.. but I saved my money and got a 1993 Saturn 4 door sedan. That car was so much fun and I drove so much in that car (lots of trips)! (Dar do you remember that car?) It had those automatic seatbelts though, which was ridiculous.. then one day it wouldn't back up and that was that.. got another Saturn.
Saturn #2 had recurring oil leaks until the car kept running out of oil and the engine was a mess, so I got a Subaru. Which worked great until the rotors kept having to be ground and the stuff in the dash kept going on and off.
Subaru #2 was my first new car (got it in 2005) but when DH's car died, he took the Subaru and we got me a "mommy car" (my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe), so that is my 5th car.
Re: POLL: your first car
My grandparents gave me their 1985 Chevy Impala green, 4door in 1995 (I was 16).
2) 2001 chevy cavalier that my BF bought me. It was sweet.
3) 2003 chevy tracker - the first new car that I bought myself (I was only 24, so I thought it was cool).
4) 2008 BMW X3 - still have it, but turning in lease in December
5) 2011 BMW 135i convertible - I get it in December!!!!
My first car was a 1994 teal Pontiac Sunfire. The paint was peeling and I only got 17 mpg. I had it 1998-2000, when I left for college
In 2004 At graduation I leased a 2004 black honda civic. Loved that car!
When that lease was up in 2007 DH and I leased a 2007 VW Jetta (our current car). The lease is up next spring, so I am looking in to new cars. Looking forward to it!
#1 - Grandma bought me a Pontiac 6000 (not sure of the year). I paid her back $100 a month until it was paid off. (can't remember how long I even had the car or how long it took me to payher back.
#2 - Grandma gave me back all that money I had paid her back and Iput a down payment on a brand new 1995 Subaru Impreza. Boy I loved that car, I had it for 10 years, 118,000 miles.
#3 (and currently). I traded the Impreza in for a brand new 2005 Subaru Legacy.. I just paid the car off and plan on keeping it another 4ish years.
and I will most likely only buy Subarus, I have had the best luck with them. I do just the regular maintenance they they seem to last me quite a while.
I didn't have my own car in high school but I drove the car that was left to us by my Grandma. It was a 1993 Chevy Cavalier. It was a great little car.
In 2000 I bought a 1994 Nissan Altima.
In 2005 I started commuting to Graduate School (an hour each way) so I gave my parents the 1994 Altima and bought their 2000 Altima from them.
We just sold the 2000 Altima back to them so they could have a 2nd car when we bought our 2010 Ford Fusion a few weeks ago.
My parents let me use their Dodge Shadow near the end of HS and beginning of college. It died a sad, sad death. LOL!
The first car I bought was a little Hyundai hatchback with a 4 speed manual transmission. This was before Hyundais were "nice" but it was a GREAT little car. I learned to drive a stick shift driving it home from the used car dealer.
My next car was my graduation present (part of my "deal" for going to a state school from my parents) and it was a 2000 Honda Civic.
I just had my own first car buying experience last June, and got a Hyundai Elantra Touring (wagon) and went back to automatic transmission. It's great!
My first car was an inherited 1981 Chevy Citation Hatchback (the 4-door model - fancy!) that had belonged to my grandmother. I loved that car - it was a TANK in the snow, and had comfy seats. It looked like this one, but in powder blue:
My second car was a green 97 Honda Civic that I bought off of my aunt in 2003. It was nice, had a sunroof, got me where I wanted to go, but when the whole exhaust system needed to be replaced I traded it in for...
My third (and current) car, a blue 2006 Honda CR-V. I flove this car. Lots of room, good mileage, and up off of the road without being a giant behemoth of an SUV. I bought it used in 2007, and today it has under 28,000 miles on it, so I will probably drive it forever.
#1 1984 Buick Skylark- it was beige but had maroon primer all over it. i took the primer off with rubbing compound- by hand! then the transmission went- three times and it had some electrical problems- like when you had too many things on (wipers, defroster, ratio) the car would just d.i.e.
#2 mid 80's blue Skyhawk- didn't have it long and i don't remember much about it
#3 1985 orange Chevy Cavalier- nick named 'the blue door' b/c it had a blue drivers door. car was actually stolen (ya know it was a highly sought after vehicle with that blue door!) from in front of my house while i was home! yes i left the keys in it but i didn't anticipate a bunch of 14 yo boys taking it for a joy ride down the block and parking in the old folks home parking lot for the weekend. they then passed the keys to their 14 yo girlfriends the next week who took it for a joy ride and got 6 blocks before my brother (who had to be about 17/18 at the time) spotted them and made then pull over. he took the keys and drove the girls back to my parents where he called the cops. the cops made them cry and i got to yell at them when they came back from being interrigated at the police station to apologize to me.
#4 blue Ponitac Sunbird- '89 i think. great car dad replaced the engine for me and i loved driving it i was actually really sad about selling it but then again i finally had a...
#5 Jeep Wrangler, 1991. i still miss her. she was awesome. i had her fenders replaced (twice), and painted, two sets of tops & doors, three sets of tires & rims. automatic starter, ski rack, and a lift (2 leaf springs all around) i did tons of engine work on her (at school) and would have loved to do body work on her but she just fell apart, when i gave her to my dad (for parts for his 1991 Wrangler) there was not much floor left and the engine had about 150,000 on her.
#6 late 90's Ford Explorer (2 door) DH bought me to replace my Jeep- yeah there is no replacement for a Jeep esp a Ford Explorer
#7 2008 Jeep Liberty DH bought this just after we found out i was pregnant. we needed a more reliable vehicle and more doors- lol!
#8 2010 Chevy Traverse- the new mom mobile. it had XM and sends me e-mails and will do until i can get my 4 door Wrangler...
Can I drive around with you? I've always wanted a BMW convertible!
I've had at least 5 different versions of the same car brand. It helps having family in the automobile industry.
My first car was bought for me by my parents my junior year in college (1993). It was a 1980 Mercury Cougar. NICE!! Wasn't pretty, but it cruised and had power steering you could steer with your pinky.
My senior year (1994) I got rid of that and bought a 1991 VW Golf that I drove until things started to fall apart on it.
In 1998 I bought a 1997 Mazda Protege that I loved. I drove it until I got sick of driving a stick.
In 2002 I leased a Nissan Sentra.
In 2005 we turned in the Sentra and bought a brand new Honda Accord that I am thrilled to say got paid off last week!! I keep up on all the service and know that it is still a baby with 130,000 miles on it. I plan on having it a good four more years.
#1. MoxyMissi and I had the same first car!!! Mine was a 1981 tan Chevy Citation - also 4 door. It died a horrible death when I rolled it the summer I was 16. It had previously been my parents car that was in storage at my grandparents the whole time we were overseas, and then my brother drove it for a few years before me.
#2. 1993(?) Chevy Crapalier (Cavalier). I got this at the very end of my junior year in HS. My punishment from killing the Citation was to ride the bus to school for a year, and pay part of my insurance. I drove this car until I went to college, and couldn't have a car my freshman year. My sister drove it for a year then, and I got it back sophomore year of college. We parted ways after college graduation when I bought #3.
#3. The only car I have bought and paid for every penny of all by myself, and I even negotiated with the dealer myself: 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid. I love, love, love this car. It was my college graduation present to myself.

My grandma bought me my first car before I even turned 16... A 1980 Buick boat (I don't even remember the model!) Her friend passed away, and it had been sitting in the garage for 12 years because the women didn't drive. Her husband bought it brand new and only drove it a couple years before he died. The thing had such low mileage, but was older than I was! I drove it until I was in my first semester of college.
#2 was a Geo Prism. My parents bought it, and I paid them a monthly payment (like $85/month or something rediculously cheap) Gosh, I loved that car! It was awesome on gas. But I only had it about a year, and got in a bad accident and it was totaled.... like a month after I had paid my parents back!
#3- my first brand new car, a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, silver. My dad worked for GM at the time, so I got a sweet deal.
#4- and my current car is an '09 Honda CR-V.
#1 '94 Mercury Topaz (Ford Escort basically). My grandma bought it for me just before my senior year in HS(2000). She passed away a month later so I never got a chance to pay her back or properly thank her. I loved that car, it came to college with me and went on many adventures. It had automatic seat belts in the front, and at some point the rear passenger side door stopped locking so I never had to worry about locking the keys in my car. Though my friends used this against me and TP'd the inside of my car (as well as the outside) I had that car until the end of my sophmore year in college. Then the brakes and transmission went so my parents helped me get car #2.
#2 '00 Chevy Cavalier I still have this car. It has taken DH and I on many trips, including our HM in Florida. It has had a lot of problems over the years, the CD player stopped working a year after I got it, the A/C outlet no longer works, and my check engine light has been on since '07 (no one can seem to fix it for more than 500 miles, enough that it still passes inspection)
#3 '07 Ford Focus. We just bought this car in May when DH's car bit the dust. We had planned on getting rid of the Cavalier, but that didn't happen. I really like it so far, I drive it 2 days a week right now, and DH has it 3(when he goes to Buff for work). We are trying to keep car #2 for as long as possible now, so trying to put as few miles on it as possible.
My Knot Bio My Blog
I got my first car at 17 (1996)! It was a 1985 Dodge Aries. That little K car was the best!!
After that I had two older sentras, a jetta (which had always been my dream car and turned out to be a money pit). I traded it in for a prius in March and I LOVE it!
My first car - a 1991 Lincoln Continental! We called it the Boat PC - because everything inside was digital - the speedometer, the fuel gauge... and the fuel gauge stopped working! So I always had to keep track of my miles, and estimate when I needed gas. I got it when I was 17, and drove it until I ran it into the ground when I was 20
2. My dad's 2000 or so Jeep Grand Cherokee, I only drove it for a few months in college, when I needed a car
3. A 1998 Ford Taurus - an ugly color green - got this one for my junior and senior years of college
4. A 2004 Hyundai Elantra - it was HUUUGGGEEEE - the first car I bought myself
5. A 2008 Hyundai Elantra - I love my Hyundais, but this was a very un-money matters purchase, and I shouldnt have bought it. I drive too many miles, and Im afraid I will run it into the ground before I pay it off
