For those who work shiftwork

I think there are a fellow police or fire dispatchers on here and nurses also - or anyone else who does shiftwork.  If so ...

What hours do you work?

Do you have a rotating schedule?

Do you like it?

Re: For those who work shiftwork

  • We work two day shifts 6:45am - 7pm followed by two night shifts 6:45pm - 7am then four days off.  That's our constant rotation and we end up having weekends off every 6wks.

After doing this almost 13yrs I think I'm ready for a career change, I'm sick of working nights, weekends and holidays - especially now that we're married and once we have kids.  I know I want to help people but don't know what to do or where to look.  I'll know when it hits me upside the head.  I'd love to work with Veterans or animal therapy/animal rescue but a lot of those jobs seem to be volunteer based.

  • alilfish - what do you do?

I work 7-730.  I used to do completely day shift, but now I do at least one week of nights.  Everyone does 1 weekend a month.  I'm on a track, which means I work the same 4 week rotation every month.  F, S,S then off 2 days, work W,Th, F then off 2 days, work M, Tu, Th, have 3 days off then work M, T, W then I have 8 days off and start over the following F, S, S.

Pros are that I can predict my schedule for months ahead, and that I know exactly when I'm working.  Cons are that it's the exact same schedule every month, sometimes I'd like a little variation.  Not everyone's on a track.

I prefer working days because I don't have to change my sleep schedule and I feel like I work "normal hours."  Plus, I get to sleep with HH!  I like the pace of night shift, because usually there's less to be done (usually tests are done during the day, blood products are giving during the day, etc) and of course, it's slower because patients are sleeping!  And I can sleep late.  SO not a morning person.

I can't wait until I get through grad school so I can work at a primary care office and work 9-5!  I know it sounds weird saying that I'd rather work 5 days a week instead of 3, but those 12 hour shifts are long and I'm tired of getting home at 8pm.

  • I am a Police Dispatcher....

Currently I am on the midnight shift from 1030pm to 7am, this is my first year on this shift, I was on the afternoon shift for the last 5 years. We shift bid by seniority so once we are on a shift we stay on it for the whole year until we bid again. Unfortunately I do not have enough time on for day shift so it is either afternoons or midnights at least for the next couple of years for me.

I do not like the hours of midnights right now, I cannot get enough sleep during the week when I work (sleeping during the day is not easy), and on days off I seem to only want to sleep all the time. We have rotating schedules 5 on 2 off 5 on 3 off, I am use to working weekends and holidays so it does not bother me anymore. Luckily DH is in the same line of work and understands.

I absolutely LOVE my job, and the people on my shift now, I just wish now that we are trying to start a family I could have normal hours.

I'm a dispatcher along with some of the other girls on here.  My old job in CO was only police dispatch (as well as 911 calls) but my current job is both police and fire dispatch along with 911.

When will you be done with grad school?

  • I thought that's what you did, I remembered it right after I posted that.

I haven't even started grad school, that's the problem! :(  I've applied and I'll either start next month for fall, or be deferred until spring because I applied late.  :(

  • I work 32hr 7-3 shift as a nurse. I work every other weekend and every other holiday. Fortunately I don't have to rotate shifts.  I love working 7-3.  I have to get up early but I'm out early enough to enjoy the afternoons.
  • I am a med tech and I work 1pm-930pm.  I hate the shift as far as my family goes, but I agreed to it as a "training period".  If they don't change my shift to days in September, I will go somewhere else.  (The other options are 5am-130pm, which is what I'm shooting for, and 9pm-530am.)

The plus side to my current swing shift is that it is busy for me.  I have 3 med passes  (2pm, 5pm, and 8pm), so that makes my 8 hours go by super fast.  The downside is obviously that hubby has to deal with the kids for dinner & bedtime.  And my feet hurt, lol.

I used to work the overnight at the hospital, 10pm-8am and sometimes 10pm-10am.  I actually really liked it except for the fact that I was weekends only and once again, hubby had to juggle everything with the kids & it made us fight a lot because he worked during the week & wanted his weekend "off" to be relaxing.  I loved the people; they seemed to be much friendlier than the dayshift people, and I really liked that I could do my work without management staring over my shoulder.
