You are in Alexandria? Ft. Belvoir?
My dad's family is from the area... I read your post about how awful it is living in DC now and I 100% agree. Everything just seems to be going downhill there... metro, weather related issues, murders... it has become such a pit!
I agree though-- Fredericksburg is a LOT better... not perfect, but better. I went there for my 4 years of college. The last year I lived there (right before I moved actually) there was a shotgun shooting in my apartment complex. It's a shame the crime is creeping down I95!
Any idea where you guys are going next?
Re: **Alilfish**
Hey! We are in Alexandria and live right by Ft Belvoir but HH is currently working at the Pentagon. There are places that my girl friends and I joke that you don't go to alone and I sometimes turn my wedding ring around (mostly along Richmond Hwy, haha). HH is generally armed when we go out and it doesn't help that I work for local law enforcement and know things citizens don't.
We're not really sure where we'll be going next, we probably won't find out until late 2012. Unfortunately, the DC area is a high possibility for him to keep getting stationed because of his MOS so that sucks. We'd like Charlottesville, NC, WA, AZ would be nice only because it's close to my hometown & parents in CO but HH is hoping like mad for Alaska. He got screwed in being extended here so they've mentioned helping him get the Alaska assignment. Germany is also a possibility. I wish we knew now!
We're definitely both more 'small town' people, especially when we have kids. Do you know what I miss?! Country music, rodeos and cowboys (not the actual cowboys but the way of life).
Does your family still live here? Do you come up often? My mom's family is from southern VA just north of the NC border, it's like two different states - that's "real Virginia"!
hahahah I know exactly what you mean! The whole area has become very sketch!
My husband was in the army for 8 years.... was stationed in MO at Ft. Leonardwood for a while... then Kuwait/ Iraq... and then finished out at Ft. Belvoir.
That sucks you won't know anytime soon
Have you ever been to Charlottesville? It's maybe 45 minutes from where I am... it's so much more quaint! Downtown has a wonderful quiet feel to it, but there's SO much to do! I have friends stationed in Alaska and they LOVE it!!!! Is your hubby a career solider?
I hear you! Jason and I are verrrryyyy small town. I can't ever imagine going any further north than we are now! they still play country music here hahaha!
I have some family up there still, but not much. No one that I talk to. I try to avoid them like the plague haha!
We drove through Charlottesville and had lunch there, we really liked it. I feel like I unwind immediately and can breathe again as soon as we leave this place. We go down to Fredericksburg frequently so HH can go to Gander Mtn, haha. I'd really like to be stationed in any of the southern states, even Alaska would be nice. It seems like everyone who goes there loves it and a lot of them don't want to leave.
HH is career, he has almost 20yrs in and will probably stay because of promotion time and due to the economy. I really miss the small town feel, some days I am soooo grouchy here because of the people and traffic. It helps to know that it's only temporary and I can't complain too much because his position now is considered non-deployable. Which of course means he'll get deployed again as soon as we move.
Does your HH miss it? Are you going to be in VA indefinitely? I completely understand why you avoid this area!
Really??? I'm in fredericksburg ALL THE TIME... mostly because they have chipotle, which my little town desperately needs haha
the military life is definitely a tough one. Jason considered doing civilian contracting through the military for a lonnnng time... but now he's in such a good place at work it just wouldn't make sense for him to leave.
I think he misses it a lot sometimes. He misses the comradery, loyalty, and patriotism more than anything. We're definitely staying in Virginia... as long as it doesn't become like NOVA!
