Spot cleaning carpet

We just got new carpet and I'm trying to be proactive and have a plan on how to clean any spills (or other accidents that will occur after baby is here).  What products do you have on hand for carpet stains?  What do you do when you spill something?  Are there different things to do or use for different types of stains?

TIA for your help!  The carpet we had before was so nasty that we didn't really try if we spilled or dropped something.

Re: Spot cleaning carpet

  • I always use spot shot.  My accidents are usually cat related, and it seems to do a really good job.  I really want to get a spot bot, but it just isn't in the budget right now so I just lust after it.

I live by Spot Shot!!! Costco sells it in 4 packs too which help with 3 dogs and a cat. I think I would have a heart attack if they went out of business.

  • I use vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then blot up- it works wonders, plus it's safe for my 19 month old to be around. I just use 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water in a spray bottle.

  • As with anything, be sure to test the vinegar/water on a small area first- we have light colored carpets and have never had a problem with it, but you never know!
  • I read on the nest a couple weeks ago to try Oxy Clean.  I tried it on some spots (they have been there for a while and didn't come up with a spray) - they came right out.
  • We have Resolve, Red Wine Stain Remover, and OxyClean spray all on hand, and surprisingly, the OxyClean spray works the best on almost everything.

  • Thanks everyone!  I'm going to get some things and do some spot checks now!
  • Never heard of Spot Shot.  Do you know if grocery stores has it?  We do not have a Costo here.

I have two cats and a dog, and well, they all get sick at times, and I can't get the stains out.

  • I second the Resolve.  I love it!  Also, I learned online that for nail polish spills (ugh...maybe I shouldn't do my nails on the carpet!), you can use Barbasol brand shaving cream... it actually works!

I have seen them at Lowes as well but it's a smaller single can and a little pricey. Sam's Club sells it as well, or you can buy online. But the online price IMO isn't worth it. I would look at any wholesale warehouses first.

  • Something that we have now and cleans up just about anything is the Bissel Little Green.  It's a little more expensive than a spray, but it seriously works and it's easy!  It's just a mini carpet cleaner.  We leave the solution in the little green and then when one of the pets has an issue of some sort, we just pill it out and clean it and within a couple minutes, it's gone!
