Anyone here a CSA member?

A co-worker of DH's was telling him about this when we ran into her at the Cedar Park Farms to Market this past Saturday.  Sounds like something we'd be interested in, so I was just wondering if anyone here participates and if so, how often to you pickup a box.  Who is your CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)?

Re: Anyone here a CSA member?

  • for the nestie looking to volunteer, you can apparently volunteer on this farm in exchange for a share of seasonal veggies.  yum!

  • We have a similar program through work; we sign up weekly, though.  I think with what I got I would have been better off just going to the farmer's market.  What you get is seasonal.  Some of my coworkers who participate enjoy the challenge of incorporating new foods into their weekly meals, but I'm just too picky.

You may want to go check out the volume and type of produce before you join, but it's a great program to be a part of.

  • I want to do this eventually, but since there are just two of us, I don't want to be stuck with 5 lbs of beets or collard greens (for example).  I know it would go to waste before we got around to consuming it.  ;(

  • I looked into it, but as ssinca said, I don't think we are good candidates since we are just two people and I have heard that they often give you a ton of one veg. We like more variety.

My friend (in Boston) is a member of a meat CSA and loves it since you can freeze it. She says you have to be a little adventurous to enjoy it, though (think: goat meat).

I belonged to Hairston Creek a few years back. I learned to jar/can because I in fact did get 4lbs of beets! Made a great b-day present for my dad though, he loves them. M_and_m and I had a bad experience with Walnut Creek.

  • We split a CSA last year with some neighbors because we were in the same situation.  It was still a bit more for us.

I've since become hooked on Greenling.com- it's like a CSA in that they deliver fresh local organic produce, but you can do it week by week instead of committing to several weeks/months worth at a time.  You can also add local/organic meat, dairy, baked goods, and lots of normal grocery items.  It's a fantastic service, and I've been really happy with it every time I've ordered.

thanks for sharing, this might actually work better for us!  especially since I go through moods where I want to cook, and then there are periods where I want nothing to do with cooking. ;)
