The "secretive co-owner" of Trader Joe's (a specialty store in my area) has died. I had no idea TJ's was such a covert operation.

Re: Specialty Sadness
When Forbes featured the brothers in 1992 as two of the world's richest men, the magazine had to uses silhouettes rather than photographs to illustrate the article since no pictures of them had been published in many years.
Is he Alfred Hitchcock?
Who knew the same guy was behind Aldi and TJs. I can't really stand either, but for much different reasons.

I am not familiar with this Aldi. I have only been in TJs a handful of times, but in one of the towns we are looking at, sellers consider the existence of a TJs in town a reason for homes to be priced higher. Um, no.

I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
I used to love Aldi - there was one near my flat in London. Everything I ever got there (even if I was a little bit
about it was good).
I've never gotten on the Trader Joe's bandwagon... I walk into one of them and for some reason I get outrageously confused and overwhelmed and have to leave, usually with nothing.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
I'm a weirdo. When I lived in CA, I only bought wine there. In NY, I think I was completely turned off by the one in the city near NYU b/c it was always NUTS. And we don't buy a lot of prepared or processed foods, which seems to be their differentiator.
I'm happier going to Whole Foods for most things, and the neighborhood Shop Rite for the misc
I'll admit, I'm a Whole Foods snob.

We have some pretty nice Aldi's around here. It's good for basics; the milk is hormone free. I do not get their fruits or veggies. I will pour out a 50 cent box of macaroni in his memory.
Now, TJ's? I could live there.
Yes. The checkout line snaked around the entire store, and you'd have to enter, go directly to the back of the line, and grab stuff to throw in the cart as the line moved.
I miss the wine shop, though. It wasn't too crowded...if you avoided Thurs-Sat and holidays.
Yikes. And I thought our TJs were busy. It's just hard to find a place to park.

I knew that there had to be some connection between Aldi and Trader Joes.
We get all our staples at Aldi. The one on our side of town is super nice, but the one closer to downtown is a little sketch. I can't complain since mac and cheese is 30 cents.
