Well July has been a rough month for DH and I.
I posted previously about DH's little cousin having a subdural hematoma on the brain. Well she is doing okay right now, still waiting to get in with a specialist for a full work up. But the bleeding has stopped and her body should absorb the blood. She has just been taking it easy.
So on top of that we found out a few weeks ago that my great aunt, who is only in her early 70s, has lung cancer. The same disease my great grandmother (her sister) died of 3 years ago. She has been rapidly declining and unfortunately is in poor spirits. She was scheduled to have part of her lung removed on Monday, when they opened her up she was full of cancer so they couldn't operate. My Mom doesn't know how much longer she will live.
Well the final blow came this morning. My grandfather has for over the last two years been losing his memory and cognitive skills. My Mom who specializes in Alzheimer's care (she owns two assisted living facilities) has suspected that it might be Dementia and more recenlty thought Parkinson's disease. My family was waiting for the wedding to be over to find out more and my grandfather went this week for a "check-up" with his family doctor. The doctor agreed with my Mom's assumptions and ordered testing. Well they called with the results this morning and we are all dumbfounded. He has Hydrocephalus, or more commonly known as water on the brain. This is what has been causing the memory loss and other issues, not dementia/alzheimer's/or parkinson's. He needs immediate surgery on his brain and my family is meeting with a neuro-surgeon hopefully this afternoon.
I am hoping that once the surgery is scheduled I will be able to fly back to Boston. Flights are well over $1000+ and I have a lot going on at work next week. I am really praying that I can swing it, if anything ever happened in surgery and I wasn't there I would be devastated. My family is super close and my grandparents live in an in-law apartment within my parent's home. This is going to be tough on everyone so can you please keep us in your prayers? Between my grandfather and my aunt it's going to be an emotional roller coaster over the next few weeks.
Thanks for letting me vent, I am at work trying to put on a "happy face" when I just want to go home and cry!
Re: More T&Ps needed
I am so sorry about your family!
My grandfather had the same thing (he was 94) and the surgery to clear the water was successful, but then he died of unrelated heart failure. So it is very possible for the surgery to make him better!
Now, I'm not trying to put a jinx on anything, but would you be able to get a bereavement ticket price to try and fly for a little less money? I don't remember if you have to have proof that a person died, but I'm just trying to think of a way to save you some money so you can hurry home.
If I can think of some less morbid cheap plane ticket ideas, I'll pass it on.
Thanks Sharryn, I am sorry to hear about your grandfather. I had a death in my family last year and the Canadian airlines only give bereavement pricing for international flights outside of North America. So unfortunately it's not possible to get a cheaper fare. Last time I ended up using frequent flyer miles, which I don't have left. I'll be able swing the cost, it just stinks since we have been very diligent about putting money away for a down payment. I would rather be there though, so the financial sacrifice is definitely worth it.

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather. It sounds like this has been a rough month for you! I will say that I am a nurse on a Neuro unit and we take care of patients with spine and brain defects all the time. Normally, for hydrocephalus a VP (Ventriculoperitoneal) shunt will be placed to drain the fluid into the abdominal cavity. If everything goes smoothly, our patients with this surgery do well and do not stay in the hospital long. You and your family are in my prayers!

Let me know if you need anything! I'm working right outside the city next week so I drive in (vs. taking the train) so just let me know.
