We got engaged.
I have mixed feelings about the memory, actually, which is awful. Obviously, I'm really glad that it happened, but we'd had the month from hell leading up to Matt's proposal, and the first six months of our engagement were the worst of my life for various reasons. BUT, the proposal itself was great.
I knew he'd had the ring for a few weeks and was just making me sweat it out for a bit; I also knew a proposal was imminent because he'd promised we'd be engaged before he had to do training camp (he was a HS football coach the last two years).
He was planning to propose that Friday night on a hike, but he was so anxious and impatient at work on Thursday that he decided to do it a day before he had originally planned. He showed up at my place right as I got home from work and insisted that I go change into hiking gear because we were going hiking right that very minute. I pointed out that it was raining, and he said it didn't matter.
He wouldn't tell me where we were going, but after over half an hour drive back past his place, he turned onto a state forest road and told me that we were hiking about half a mile back a trail his buddy had told him about to a rock overlook. It had stopped raining by that time, but that didn't help with the fact that there were no signs and no maps to be found.
So we ended up wandering around in circles on various trails and service roads for about an hour. We finally gave up due to hunger. We were almost back to the car when he stopped me and started his speech and then went down on one knee... in the parking lot. I jumped on him to hug him and he just yelled "Ow!! Gravel in my knee! Get off!"
We went back to his place, baked a frozen pizza, and had a bottle of wine. It was great. After dinner, though, he texted the news to pretty much everyone he knew and spent the rest of the night fielding congratulations! I'd sworn to tell my best friend before I told anybody else, but I couldn't get ahold of her, so I had to sit and grit my teeth and keep the news to myself while my new fiance sat there texting people. Oh, well. It all worked out in the end. ![]()
What's your proposal story?
Re: One year ago today...
Adam had already had the ring for a while (I picked it out actually). I had just gotten home from work on a particularly hellish day and I came inside and threw my stuff down and started walking towards the kitchen to get a beer. I noticed that there was some paper folded up on Brody's collar, so I pulled it off and opened it up... It was a letter from Brody. It said "Don't marry Daddy. Marry me instead. I'm cuter and besides, I'm already wearing a tux!" It was signed "Booger-monster" and had a pawprint in mud stamped at the bottom. I turned around and Adam was on one knee with flowers and the ring. He asked me to marry him, I said yes (duh). I then drank two bottles of champagne and called my best friend to tell her. It was 3 days before Christmas and we wanted to wait until Christmas to tell my family so we could surprise them.
Side-note: Adam said it took him FOREVER to get the pawprint on the paper because the ground was frozen outside and he had to keep getting cups of hot water to pour on the ground to get it muddy enough!!
We were engaged on July 25th 2009.
Jon and I had downloaded and watched all the Cheers episodes. We decided we wanted to visit Boston and we chose to watch the series finale there in our hotel room.
Little did I know, Jon carried a ring around that whole time (in his pocket not in a box) we were on the trip, waiting for the "perfect" moment to propose. He told me later he was afraid he was going to pull it out with his change and ruin the surprise.
He ended up proposing on the last day of our trip. Our last stop was Harvard, which I had always wanted to visit. He proposed there. He told me he had had the ring for months and had only told his best friend he was going to propose. We had talked about it, but I was still surprised!
He chose the setting of the ring by himself and it has diamonds from one of his mother's rings in it. His brother made his sister in law a ring (11 years ago) from the same original ring, so we share that in common (I get along with SIL).
When we returned to Canada (I had my cell off the whole time to avoid roaming charges), I had a phone message from my best friend in Edmonton. She had gotten engaged too! Since I'd had my phone off so long, I assumed she had gotten engaged on some other day of the trip, but was excited it was around the same time. When I finally got ahold of her, I found out that, no, she had gotten engaged the same day and we had gotten engaged within an hour or so of each other. It was unbelievable. And completely unplanned.
We went on our annual trip to the Outer Banks with my family on July 5, 2009. On the 7th, we went down to the beach to relax. Jason had been talking about going metal detecting for a while. He kept asking me to go down the beach with him to find a million dollars. I kept saying no, no, no, but I finally got up to go with him.
We found a few coins, but then the detector started to go crazy. We moved a little bit of sand out of the way and there was some wood and metal hinges. More uncovering revealed that there was actually a treasure chest buried in the sand.
When I opened the chest, I found a dozen pink roses and a note that basically stated that Jason was the luckiest guy in the world, I was his treasure, and he couldn't think of anyone else he wanted to spend his life with. (yes, I framed the note for our house haha)
When I looked up (crying my eyes out), Jason was already on his knee with the ring that Jason custom created. The diamonds were the stones from the engagement ring my dad gave my mom. My entire family was there to witness the event and capture the whole thing on camera! It was the best day!
We were engaged on May 1 of last year. I had just finished my education degree, but had about two weeks before graduation, so we had booked a trip to Hawaii as a grad present to me from HH and his parents.
I have a thing for hiking and the outdoors, so HH had booked a private guided hike for us. It was just he and I, and our guide. Our guide knew what was going to go down, but I was clueless. We were in this gorgeous bamboo rainforest with all these beautiful waterfalls, and at the last one he got down on his knee and proposed. It was sooooooo perfect!! The neat thing was that we got photos of the actual moment because the guide was there with us.
I love that!
I tried to tease him and say "Well, I don't know... I mean, this is all so sudden; I need time to think it over," but I could tell immediately that that was not what he wanted to hear! LOL.
Greg and I got engaged a few days before Christmas in NYC. We went up there for the weekend for our "big" present to each other-- we stayed at a really nice hotel and went out for the most expensive meal of our lives! It was the kind of place where you have to tip two people-- your server, and then the guy who tells you what kind of wine to order with each course (which was completely lost on us since we know nothing about wine!)
Anyway, we spent all day walking around the city, taking a horse and carriage ride, visiting the MoMA, etc. Then when we get to the dinner, Greg decides that he wants us to exchange our small gifts-- which were ornaments for our Christmas tree. I gave him mine, and then he hands me his-- I open it, and there's the ornament with a ring next to it.
My favorite part of the whole thing though, was that even though we got all dressed up and tried really hard to be "fancy" for the night-- we found out later that the tags on Greg's suit he bought specifically for this night were still on, and everyone in the restaurant could see he bought it at H&M-- on clearance. Haha.
My favorite part of that whole story is that you immediately rushed back inside to tell your SERVER first!! LOL
thanks :-) I'm a fan haha
DH told me that we needed to take a weekend trip to Niagra Falls to see it frozen (it was January). We left when I got off work on Friday and drove up there. I fell asleep in the car and woke up shortly before we arrived. I had to go to the bathroom soooo bad but there were no rest areas. When we got to Niagra he insisted on going up in the Sky Wheel immediately. I thought my bladder was going to explode but he insisted! When we got the top he had arranged for it to stop. Then he got down on his knee and proposed! Obviously I said yes. Then I had to cross my legs in agony while we continued the ride. He was so nervous, it was adorable, but all I could think about was finding the nearest restroom, LOL!
Totally agree!!!
Pakarufus -Oh and the going to the bathroom thing UGH wow I can't imagine you poor dear girl!!! I think I would have said yes to anything if I had to go that bad!!!
We got engaged on September 11, 2009. We went home to Ohio and I knew he had the ring and I knew he would propose while we were home with our families and friends. For months I thought I knew how he would propose. We were going to the Ohio State/USC football game. Way back in the day one of the Ohio State presidents would stand at the end of the oval (big grassy common area) and marry students after graduation. There is a statue of him in front of the library at one end of the oval now and legend has it if you take the "long walk" down the oval holding hands with the one you love, you will be together forever. So I was pretty sure that was how he would propose.
They had just finished a major renovation on the library, so he said he wanted to walk around campus the day before the game and check it out. We get to campus and he completely bypassed the oval. He kept saying he wanted to go see all these places and I was really tired and bummed that apparently he wasn't going to propose that I said I just wanted to go take a nap, but he said he wanted to walk around some more. Finally we went to the library and it was closed. He said he wanted to see if he could get in through the back so I said I would wait out front and he was gone for a really long time. He came back and said we could head out so we started walking down the oval. He would talk about random stuff, then talk about us, then random stuff again so I was really confused if that was it or not. Finally we got to the end and he said I think I know of something that will make you happy right now and he got down on one knee. I don't really remember what happened after that.
Then he said he had another surprise for me and if I turned around our parents and my best friend would be behind us. I turned around and no one was there. They missed their cue, but all came out from hiding. Then we had a champagne toast and went to dinner.
It was awesome because even though I knew how it would happen it was still a total surprise and I loved that he arranged for everyone to be there.
Adam and I actually planned a lot of our wedding before we were engaged. Around May of last year, we started building the townhouse. We had talked about how getting married would be next after the house. So one day we were driving home from picking out all the stuff that goes in our house (faucets, doors, lights, toilets, etc) at the home studio, and I was like, "can we go look at rings tonight?" And he said, sure. So we went and looked at rings, but didn't buy anything. I knew that Adam wasn't going to buy anything until after we closed on the house because he would have to use a credit card and we couldn't do anything to mess up our credit.
We moved into the house on November 21, 2009. I knew it would be sometime after that, and I was wondering if he'd wait until Christmas. On December 9, I was texting him while I was at work, and I asked what he was up to, and he said he was at the mall, and I said, there's only one thing I want from the mall this year!! And he couldn't really come up with a good answer.
As I drove home, I was trying to convince myself that he wasn't going to do it tonight, because I didn't want to be disapointed if he didn't do it. I got home, and I noticed 2 things: 1) Adam opened the door for me and 2) when he did, Chloe wasn't there to jump on me. I looked past Adam's shoulder and he had put rose petals all over the dining room table and on the floor! On the table in the middle of the roses was my ring. He got down on one knee and of course I said yes!!
Later he told me that while he was setting up, Chloe was watching him and he said to her, I don't know why I'm nervous! It's not like she's going to say no!

I had known that Scott had a ring but I hadn't seen it and didn't have an idea when he was going to propose because he had had the ring since December of 2008. A couple weeks before Halloween there is this haunted corn maze thing in Portland. As I have mentioned before I hate the dark but he wanted to go and he said that he wouldn't let go of my hand or anything and that he wouldn't make me go through the "haunted" maze, that we could just go through the corn maze. Well we get there and ran into some friends of mine in line who were doing the haunted one so I wanted to go with them. Scott did not at all and I didn't know then but it was because he was planning on proposing in the corn maze and didn't think the haunted maze with things jumping out at us would be the most romantic location lol.
That was Friday the 16th of October. On the 17th he wanted to take me out to dinner as an early dinner for my birthday which is the 19th. We were going to go to this fondue place downtown that is pretty expensive. Well I called to make the reservation and the only reservation they had was for 10:30 at night! I thought it was too late so insisted that we go another time...ruining his next plan of proposing.
The 19th was my birthday and I had class for that night from 6-9:30 so I hadn't even seen him since he got home from work. We were both living in dorm rooms at our college at the time and while I was in class he went into my room and spread roses all over the ground and lit candles everywhere. When I got out of class I walked into my room and saw everything and a card on the window sill. I go and open the card and it was a birthday card saying that birthdays are a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future and he wrote in the bottom "I hope this is expecially true today". Scott wasn't in the room...or so I thought. As I am reading the card I hear a crash from behind me and it's Scott falling out of the closet with clothes piled on top of him because the closet rod fell. He was attempting to be smooth and sneak up behind me to get on one knee but it was still pretty cute. After getting all of the clothes off of him he got on a knee and asked
It was cute..thankfully the cascade of clothes missed the candles!
Our poor guys-- trying so hard to be smooth! LOL
Matt always makes me think of the Keystone Light billboards... Oh, you guys might not have those. They're running this ad campaign with things like "You taped the championship game-- over the wedding video. Always smooth, even when you're not. Keystone Light."
Becky, this made me laugh because when HH and I were on our hike, our guide kept getting us to pose together for pictures. At one point I had my hand on his chest and his heart was POUNDING, to the point where I even mentioned it to him...and his answer was that "the hike is kind of strenuous". Umm...right, he spends two hours at the gym every day and is the best physical shape of anyone I know, but apparently this little hike has him working up a sweat? Nope. A half hour later, after he'd actually proposed, it all made sense. I asked him a few days after why he'd been so nervous, because he knew I was a sure thing. His answer? "I wasn't nervous that you'd say no, I was nervous that it wasn't going to be perfect...you will only get proposed to once, I didn't want to ruin it!"
Awwwwwwwwwwww
These guys are so cute!
