Tell me about your laptop *Updated*

We are planning on buying a new laptop in August. We don't want a Mac, as cool as they are we really just need a computer for everyday use. We don't want to spend $1000+ on a laptop and since we've always had a PC it would be a learning curve.

My DH is technologically inept, so the decision is really mine. I have been looking at the Dell "Inspiron". I used to have a Sony "Vaio" for work and really liked it. This is going to be a tough decision, so tell me about your laptop if you have one.

Re: Tell me about your laptop *Updated*

  • For laptops, both DH and I have Macs (haha).  However, I can honestly say that I have not turned on my personal laptop since I graduated college.  I either use DH's Mac or I use my work laptop.  It's a HP Elitebook 6930p.  It does what it needs to do... I'm not sure if it would be different than a personal computer with applications as it is for work.  Generally I'm not a huge PC fan but it's definitely easier to use for my work purposes.
  • my laptop of 4.5 years is on it's last leg, so I'm starting to think about my next laptop as well. I don't have much to say at this point. BUT, in the meantime (and because I do a bit of traveling) I did just buy myself a Samsung netbook that I LOVE.

  • I have an Inspiron 1500 but it's pretty "old" in terms of laptops. Some of the keys don't work, one of the USB ports works when it feels like it, etc. But it has a Pentium III processor which makes it better able to handle more than one program at once without freezing or slowing down. It also has a 15-inch widescreen which is really good for watching movies, playing games or playing videos and they're really clear.

That's about all I can think of. I don't know how much it cost because my parents got it for me as a Christmas gift a few years ago and my mom got it at a discount through her job. GL and let us know how your search goes!

  • We just bought a Toshiba before the wedding andj absolutely love it.  Our prior laptop was an HP, and it seemed to be trouble from day one.  We got ours from Best Buy, and ended up getting a discount on the printer that we got with it and it also came with a portable (or external?) hard drive.

  • Sony Vaio all the way!  They really are the best, most reliable laptops!  My mom has an HP and DH has a Samsung, and mine works better than all of theirs!  I recommend Best Buy and their service plan for little things that go wrong (broken keys, new charger, new battery, etc), but other than that, mine has worked great for 4 years.
  • Dh and I both have Macs.  I had my last Mac laptop for 4 years and couldn't have been happier.  I bought this one two years ago and have yet to have a problem with it.  I only bought a new one because I broke the power cable (totally my fault) and it was going to be $100 to replace so I decided it was better to put the money towards a new one instead.

I know you said you didn't want a Mac, but...  they really stand behind their products and the stores have the Genious Bar (sp) where you can make an appointment and if they can fix it in 15-20 minutes, it's free even outside of warranty.  If it's covered by warranty, they will fix it in the store and you can (generally) pick it up later in the day or the following day.

It's a lot easier to switch than you'd think.  Yes, the price tag is higher.  Even if I didn't need the capabilities of a mac, I would still buy one for the ease and lack of viruses.

  • I second the Mac rec. We don't personally have a Mac, but we are saving for one.

It's really not that hard to learn how to navigate one, and there are tutorials on everything! Plus, like Spce said, the Genius Bar at the Apple store will help you out and fix your Mac for free! Just call ahead a make an appointment if you ever need to go in the store.

    hth!

  • Thanks for all of the recommendations! We are going to go to Best Buy this weekend to check everything out. I'll let you know if we decide anything!

As for the Macs, everyone I know who has one loves them. However, we currently have a desktop that is on it's last leg. The new laptop will replace the desktop. But most likely we will have to buy another laptop in the spring since we are moving to the States and DH will need a computer to bring with him back to Edmonton during the football season. I don't want to spend $1000+ for a Mac (which are more expensive in Canada, Blah), when we will need to purchase another computer in less than a year anyway.....KWIM?

  • What about getting a laptop and a netbook?  I don't know how you guys use your computers, but if DH didn't do work at home, he'd be perfectly fine with a netbook.

  • We ordered a Dell Inspiron last night, the sale was ending today and we got it for $200 off. We looked at Best Buy and a few other places after work yesterday, they all seemed over priced for their inventory (which is usually the case in Canada). My Dad is a software developer and he gave us the go ahead on this particular laptop, he actually just bought one for my Stepmom.

SpceCadet- I think we are going to look at a netbook for DH in the future, the only issue is they are so small and he has massive hands. We'll see!

  • My husband has a netbook and he loves it. They are really great for traveling and it was exactly what he was looking for. I'll even use it from time to time. I will admit that they keys were a little small at first, but then I got used to it. They are bigger than cell phone keypads and people get used to those so I can't imagine he'll have a huge problem.
