I've got to write this on my calendar: DH admitted I was right! As I've posted before, something is eating our tomatoes in spite of being in serious suburbia with a 6 ft. yard fence and 3 ft. mesh fence around each bed. DH and I got into a huge fight last night about my wanting to pick the tomatoes just before the critter is eating them (so ~2 days before they're fully ripe) and letting them ripen inside. He pitched a huuuge fit about "why do we have an organic garden if we're not going to let our tomatoes vine ripen!?! We are trying vine ripening again!" He admitted the tomato sandwich I made him yesterday with our ripened-inside tomatoes was awesome, so his argument made.no.sense. My mom and Google say animals eat tomatoes only where they're thirsty, and to put out some water for them.
So I did that, and the animal ate all three of our almost-ripe slicing tomatoes last night.
I left them, half-gnawed and all, on the kitchen table. DH IMs me this afternoon and says "I saw the tomatoes. You were right."
HA!
Re: Gardening related: DH admitted I am right!
Sorry you lost your tomatoes.
We were losing our smaller variety of tomatoes to the critters, and have started picking them sooner as well. The garlic spray I've tried smells nasty, but is not fixing the issue. The fence, and an accidental scare with our dog are not keeping them out either.
So, I agree. You are right.
Sorry you lost the tomatoes :-(
A coworker lives in suburbia, with a fence, both neighbors have dogs, and that does not seem to deter woodchucks, bunnies (ate ALL their lettuce within hours of planting it), etc from finding her garden. I live in a very rural area, have a lot that backs up to woods, and nothing has touched ours.
Aww that sucks! How frustrating. Hopefully there are more waiting in the wings to be ready soon?
Same. Our groundhogs live outside the backyard fence and even though deer could jump our backyard fence (3-rail, wire lined), they don't come in for some reason. Our yard used to have 8' chainlink so we think maybe they are just used to not being able to come in...not sure but it's a good thing!
