maternity leave question for the mommas
I got a question. I don't want to give out to much information on whhhy I'm curious cause its a public board. But if you'd need more... email me.
And no, I'm not pregnant. And no, I'm not trying to get pregnant right now haha.
Talk to me about maternity leave. Do you use up your sick time then go w/out pay? Short term disability? If so, how does std work? Do you need to be at a job for a certain amount of time before using any of this?

I used my vacation time, then my sick time, then we have extended sick time, and with our benefits we are able to purchase std insurance... Which I had. Here is how my pay broke down.
Vacation/Sick time was at my regular 100 % pay
Extended sick leave - was paid out at 80%
My short term disability was paid out at 100% as well - I can't remember if taxes were taken out or not.
The way Short Term Disability works pretty much depends how much they take from your check - there are sliding scales, for instance mine kicked in 14 days from my hospital admittance date.. Depending on how much you choose to pay (the less you pay the longer you have to wait to be able to submit for pay - some people opted to wait 45 days !!!). I hope I'm making sense because I'm trying to type this on the DL. ha ha
When I returned to work, I think I ended up coming out of pocket a little bit which was for my insurance/dental premiums that didn't get paid since I wasn't actually working my 80 hours a week.
*Edit * Since it was posted down there... Correct with FMLA I could have been out an additional 12 weeks without pay and they would have had to hold my job.
varies from job to job and state to state..
at my job we're required to take only 5PTO days and get 6-8 weeks state disability of 67% pay up to $500/week whatever state doesn't cover our company short term disability picks up. Then in NJ i qualify for NJ Family leave insurance which is 6-8 weeks of paid leave (67% pay).. the 6-8 weeks depends obviously on vaginal or c section delivery
We are in the process of getting bought, so I will answer for both companies.
Current Company: 1 week vacation, then 7 weeks paid (more if c-section, goes up on sliding scale based on how long you have been there). This is if you have been at the company for over a year. They will hold your job, regardless of length of service, for 12 weeks as required by FMLA.
New Company: 13 weeks paid, not sure how long you have to be there. This is Excellent.
