Seba semi-ESL story

I was reminded of this yesterday after I read the long "sharing is caring" post on ML. The moment had sort of passed and my cute little m&m and cheetos stories seemed out of place with all the poop.

So anyway, we're in the car recently, ipod is playing alphabetically by song. Matt really likes The Candy Man, and the song after that is Cat's in the Cradle.

Seba: Oooo Matt! This is a good one, listen! ::turns up the volume::

Molly: ....this song?

Seba: This is a great song! ::continues to enjoy song::

Molly: It is a great song.

I wait a verse or two, thinking surely with such intense focused listening he will suddenly be like "what??" Failing that...

Molly: Honey. Do you know what this song is about?

Seba: No. I can't understand what he's saying.

(He has trouble picking out all the words in songs sung in English, it's like an accent to him.)

Molly: Ok. Well it's about a dad reflecting on how he never had time for his son since the time he was born but his son idolizes him anyway and wants to be just like him...

::Seba's face starts the slow, horrified fall::

Molly: ...and then the son grows up and the man gets old and his son never has time for him and he's grown up just like him. ::singing in my best Cat Stevens voice:: "My boy was just like me, yeah, he'd grown up just like me."

::big pregnant crestfallen pause::

Molly: Didn't you see that episode of the Office? Remember...Dwight? He was singing? Because Jim left his baby at home? Remember?

Seba: OH! That's what that was all about!

The End

  • Dear Matt,

I'm just not that into you.

    Lo...err... From, Dad

(edited out MS sh!t that made this 97% less funny)

"As of page 2 this might be the most boring argument ever. It's making me long for Rape Day." - Mouse
  • this would be a fun time to make up stories about the songs just to mess with him
  • I occasionally have to explain song lyrics to Mr. Spiderman, and he can understand what they're saying.  He's just too busy listening to the instruments to bother with the lyrics.  Like how "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" is about some woman slutting it up with strangers because her husband can't get her pregnant.

  • Cali I remember making the ill-considered decision to fill a good friend of mine in on the meaning of the first dance song (I Love You, by Sarah McLachlan) they had chosen for their wedding. They were not as appreciative as I thought they would be.

  • and you could totally make a new post for your stories over there. they do that
  • between tone deafness and non ESL-related lyric ignorance I have no earthly idea what song my husband is singing 78% of the time.

  • I love Seba ESL stories.

  • J never pays attention to the words of songs either, so we've had many of these discussions. He also is tone deaf and can't carry a tune, so when we play Cranium and get stuck with a humdinger it usually doesn't end well

When in doubt, my dad usually just makes up his own words to songs.  And he used to be in a band.  And he was the singer (and guitar player).  Those were some entertaining shows most of the time
