Make-up

So I have religiously worn Estee Lauder make-up since the day my mom took me to the mall as a tween and we went to the EL counter and I got schooled about wearing make-up. After MANY years of wearing EL, I am finally ready to branch out and try something new but I don't really know where to start.

I am not sure if it matters, but I have somewhat oily skin. I pretty much wear everything - concealer, foundation, powder, blush, eye shadow, mascara, eye liner and lipstick and I would like to be able to go somewhere that the salesperson could guide me in picking colors to complement my skin tone. I am not good about picking colors on my own.

Should I just try another counter at a department store (like MAC or Clinique)? Should I try an actual make-up retailer like the Makeup Bar or Sephora?

Re: Make-up

  • Try them all out and see which one you like best!

I just switched from Bare Minerals to MAC - I thought the guy at the MAC counter was incredibly helpful and since I am make up application stupid he really took the time to show me what he was doing, how he was doing it, and why he was doing it. I didn't feel pressured to buy something I didn't want (which is really most important to me) AND I didn't leave there looking like a whore.

When you go, make sure you tell them everything about your skin - what you like and didn't like about the EL makeup, etc so they can help you best.

  • I use Clinque sometimes. But I only use certain things like their foundation, mascara, lipgloss and sometimes if I see a color I love then I buy some eyeshadow. I really like their products. I also use their facewash which I LOVE!

I have tried MAC but wasn't as impressed for some reason. I would do some research maybe go to some of the counters and let one of the make-up people give you a test run.

I have to ask.....was it the guy who works in the Norman Dillards? I see him all the time when I go through there. I always want to go ask him to give me a makeover but he seriously creeps out DH.

  • Agreed - I'd try all of them and see what you like. And let them know just what you're looking for.

I started using Bare Minerals because I went to Sephora and had an awesome person listen to my skin issues and help me pick out something that would work for me. I didn't feel pressured to buy it, either - but I liked the coverage and still use it today.

I hope you find something you like!!

  • I've always found the MAC people to be very helpful and knowledgeable, despite their crazy makeup Stick out tongue I wear MAC concealer, eye shadows, and tinted moisturizer and have for years.

  • I agree with the MAC recommendations. I like the make-up! However, be careful what sales person gets you: I had both a wonderful experience at the MAC counter, and I had an awful experience because she just wasn't using shades that complimented my skin tone. I looked awful. But on the same token, I had a similar experience with Estee Lauder. So I suppose this could happen at any counter.

If you don't want to be nailed down to one brand, I would suggest going to Ulta or Sephora. They have makeup people in both of those places too that are incredibly helpful. I like going into Ulta and saying, "Okay, here's what I want, and this is what I want it to do," and the person can point me directly to a certain item in a certain brand brand that I might never have considered before.

Yup - he does a great job.  The first time I stopped by, DH was creeped out too.  But I had just cut bangs and really needed new lipstick. I wanted to go straight for the bright red but he convinced me that I needed to start out....not so crazy at first.  He was right.  He has totally changed my look and I am really happy about it!

  • I think you give a couple different options a try, and see what you like best! I hear so many wonderful things about MAC, and yet I also hear many love the multiple options that Sephora provides, too.

I used to use Bobbi Brown (still use a few of her things) but switched to Bare Minerals a few years ago because of their foundation. Still love it, too. I am so thankful of places like Sephora and the BE boutique at Penn Square. I'm a total make-up flunkie/defunct. Tongue Tied

  • Okay, can I ask a stupid question?  When you go to the makeup counter at Dillards or whatever, do you go without makeup on?  Or do you use their makeup remover or what?

I am in SERIOUS need of new makeup.  (I've been wearing basically the same drugstore makeup for the past 10 years.)  And I always want to stop by the makeup counters or Sephora but for some really dumb reason I am intimidated about it.

Go with a clean face so they can see what your skin looks like and what needs to be covered up and such.

  • I love Bobbie Brown and Laura Mercier.  LM has an amazing flawless face kit.  I love it!  The only thing about it is the primer I very rarely wear it but if I do I prefer smashbox primer.

Don't be intimidated! They help people with makeup all day long, it's what they do.

His name is Austin and he is great isn't he?  We grew up together. We had the same babysitter.  He has seriously been that dramatic since he was 5 years old.  My DH always makes a funny face when we go see him.  It is so embarrassing!

Anyways, to the OP I use MAC as well.  They always introduce me to the latest and greatest stuff. My new fav MAC make-up is the sparkley tri-colored blush.  It is beautiful on. They also have amazing brushes there, but they are very expensive.  MAC actually told me to buy my brushes at Ulta because they are the same quality.
