redecorate my bedroom!

OK - this is what my master bedroom currently looks like (click for larger image)...please ignore that the bed is kind of sloppily made:

Can we say BOOOOORING? I want to repaint but Ben really likes this color scheme (white, camel and chocolate brown), so I'm trying to decorate around it. Replacing furniture is out of the question, but I want to put something on that wall behind our bed - a big print or wall decal, and we also need lamps for our bedside tables.

These are the two ideas I've had (the lamps are the only style I've found so far that I thought might work with our ceiling light, which is along these lines - not the exact same, but silver and the same general style).

One or more big canvases, possibly DIY (click for larger image):

I'm totally open to suggestions, and completely crap at decorating, so please please please help! A couple of notes..
* I tend to gravitate toward large graphic prints vs fussy details
* Although Ben wants to keep the existing paint, I like color - the duvet cover we normally use is mixed greens and blues and isn't as blah as this one (this is the back-up cover for when the cat pukes on the bed *sigh*)
* The tone of the beige paint is a bit off here, but I can definitely say that blues/greens suit it better than reds/yellows

Re: redecorate my bedroom!

  • Definitely large canvases!  They give you more opportunity for personalization, especially with colors/shading, and add a bit more texture.  I've always wanted to do something like a "wall quilt" with small canvases either painted or covered in fabrics, arranged to make one big statement piece.

But I'm a little biased because I'm not a big fan of wall decals... they're just nms.

  • you might like amenity.  one of my friends has a canvas print, stretched and framed, in their living room - it looks great.  really expensive though.  and i'm not sure that you really want something square behind the bed - i like the more rectangular look you have going on.  looks like they have some smaller prints similar to the first idea you have, but in a nature theme.  i don't know, i'm terrible at decorating too - our walls are bare, with the exception of some wedding photos Embarrassed just thought i'd through that out there as some potential inspiration!

(aside) ...i will have to turn to you ladies once we move in to our new house (this weekend!) - the master bedroom is *huge*, and i have no idea what to do with it!  so far, it's just going to be a bed (on rails, no frame yet even, no less) and a dresser - from ikea. hah.  and it's very yellow.   which reminds me, i still need to post photos...

  • I'm not a huge fan of wall decals, but I really love the idea of the decals you have going on here.  If Ben wants to keep the white linens, I would stick with that because it just ads the crisp pop to the room.

I'm in the same dilema now on adding some wall art to our bedroom, but at a loss so our wall above our bed looks just like yours right now.

I'm not sure if you want to add color just to get away from all the neutral, but if you are sticking with same color theme try adding natural and inexpensive textures to the room like burlap or jute or something like that.

I don't know, but I really like where you have started with both pictures :)

  • I like the colours of the canvases, but the trees add a really great dimension of height.

Ooooh loving this store! Although you're right, it's $$$. Sad Totally my style though...maybe I could rip off some of their work. Stick out tongue

  • I love the canvases and the pop of color it adds to the room.

i <3 the amenity stuff too...but the price!  Indifferent

I love the wall decals! I'm kinda big on those myself so I'm biased but I love those trees you have in the 2nd pic...it looks really nice IMO.

Ben likes them a lot so I'm leaning toward these and maybe just incorporating color with the duvet and the lamps (some green/blue lampshades?).

you totally should.  and then sell some of your work to me so I can put it on my wall Stick out tongue  i love their stuff, especially in the blues and greens.

i like color on the wall more than the white, though it's hard to imagine with your blue/green comforter.  maybe between that and colored lampshades, that's enough "pop"?  Do the decals come in other colors?

  • hmmm you're making me feel like i finally need to get my butt in gear and do our bedroom too. right now it is pretty bare as well.

i like the wall art you have there and those lamps are cute too :) the decals are nice too but i think i prefer the canvases

They do, but I'm not sure I'd like the trees in any other shade (red, blue, black, etc). Hmm...

  • I, personally, like the canvases. They add a pop of color that I think your missing in the room. The trees are great (I'm a giant fan of decals and would love to find one I love) but the white doesn't add enough color for me. I'm a BIG color person though! If you did the trees you could make some throw pillows in those shades too and add even more color.

Our room is TOTALLY bare! I mean white walls and a duvet cover from year ago that's BLAH! I'm thinking I want a bohemian or tropical theme but not beachy, there's a post in my blog about the anthrologie bedding that I LOVE!! I thought about buying a canvas and painting it and then painting a giant Z on it in fancy writing. I love monograms. Then I thought about adding pictures around it of us dating and through the years. I love houses that have pictures everywhere! Just my thoughts for now... how'd you get the inspiration pics? Photoshop? I wish I was cool like you!
