Work shoe suggestions

So, one of my jobs is a retail job. I spend at least 5 hours standing and running up and down stairs to get stock for customers (or to restock the floor). The employees have to wear closed toe shoes for safety reasons, and the dress code is business casual, so I can't wear sneakers. I've been wearing a pair of ballet slipper style shoes, but after a few hours my feet and legs are killing me. Obviously, I am in the market for some new shows. Any suggestions?

I would prefer something that looks good with both skirts and pants. I've looked at Clarks and The Walking Company, but (if my first statement "one of my jobs" wasn't a clear enough indication), I can't afford to pay too much. Any advice is much appreciated.

Re: Work shoe suggestions

  • Danskos.

I worked in a pharmacy for several years and would run my azz off for at least 10 hours a day, usually 12.  They are the only shoes that kept my feet happy for that long.  I only had to buy two pairs - one brown, and one black.  After 4 years, they were still going strong.  I still wear them now and then when I know I'm going to be on my feet all day long.

  • These Sketchers come in all sorts of colors. People I work with wear the black or brown with dress pants.

  • i wait tables and run around all day. I swear by my dansko's. (www.dansko.com) The first pair I had lasted me 3 years and I am now on my second pair. They are worth every single penny.

I also have a pair of rockports work, that are pretty comfrotable and I wear with a skirt to work when I have to.  A little less pricy, not as amazing as my dansko's but will work. http://www.shoebuy.com/rockport-works-shoes.htm, i wear the black mary janes.

  • Dansko seems to be what I am looking for, but I just cannot afford to pay that much for a pair of shoes right now. I am hoping to get something in the meantime to hold me over until I can get Dansko. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • I know people laugh at Crocs (and I have too), but I just bought a pair of flats from the Croc outlet store here and LOVE them.  They will work with casual clothes and jeans.  I have a lot of problems with my feet and these are the most comfortable shoes I've put on in a long time.  Plus, I was amazed at the number of styles they had other than the big, bulky original style.  Cost for my pair was $5, but they were off season and on sale.  Even the new colors were just about $30.
  • People in the restaurant industry wear TreadSafes. You can get them at Wal Mart, and I don't remember them being very pricey. I had one short lived restaurant job, but I remember that they had some decent looking ones that were black.

I'm not certain this will be your answer, but it's worth looking in to.
