Nosebleeds

Do any of you get them?  I knew a few people who got them when I was a kid, and I thought it was so gross, but then I started getting them as an adult.  I get them on a fairly regular basis now, and I can't figure out what's causing them...they just happen out of nowhere.  Case in point - I was woken up by one this morning.  I was fast asleep, hours before I would have woken up, and I just feel this rush of blood running down my face...it woke me up and I'm not happy about it!  They don't last long, definitely under a minute.

HH gets them too, but his are a whole lot more infrequent.

Could it be because I have allergies and am constantly blowing my nose?  Who knows.  Roar.

Yep! It could. I used to get a lot of nosebleeds, but they've lessened in recent years. Sometimes it had to do with my nose being dry (from frequent nose-blowing or a climate change; it was worse in winter, when the house was dry).

Am I mis-remembering, or didn't you move from Ontario to a western province recently? Is it drier where you live now? That could have something to do with it. If you moved to a higher altitude, that could play a role, too.

  • Get a saline nasal moisturizer to spray in your nose to moisten those dry nasal passages because when they get dry they can get irriated.  No unexplained bruises anywhere, right?

I agree with all of this.  Or if you're like me, I broke my nose years ago and I guess it just didn't heal right or something, so now, if I accidentally get hit in the nose (even just a slight touch) I bleed.

  • Nope, no bruising anywhere, and I don't think I've ever had a broken nose but I did cheerlead for years and years plus I played rugby in high school so I've definitely taken a bump or two.  I don't think that's it, I think it's the allergies and dry nose.  When I take allergy meds it makes my nose really really dry, so that's got to be it.  I do have a saline spray somewhere though, thanks for reminding me I have it!!!

  • I was thinking altitude or something, but I really have no idea.  One of my students got one on the way to recess last year and it was SO DISGUSTING and lasted FOREVER.  Eww and (TMI) but it got all clotted and thick and lumpy.  The other teacher seriously almost threw up.  That's all.....thanks! :)

  • Yeah, it's most liking from blowing your nose frequently and it being dry.  I get them occasionally and that's what it's from.  Years ago I got them a lot, but I was anemic at the time and the two were somehow related.

  • whenever we sleep with the fan on in our bedroom, I always wake up with a slight nosebleed because it dries me out.
  • Sarah, we sleep with the fan on every night!!!  Even in winter!!  (HH needs it because he says he likes the white noise....I do it even when he's not here because I'm just so used to it, it's a habit)  I never even THOUGHT of that being a trigger for the nosebleeds!!  You're brilliant!!

  • Maybe have a fan in the bedroom for him and a humidifier in the bedroom for you. :)
  • humidifier I bet will help you. When we moved to the desert this happened to my kiddos. 2 out of the 3. Let me tell you walking into the room of your 3 year old thats face hair and pillow covered in blood is scary. She wouldn't walk up from it. It was horrible!!! UGH!!! They are ok now but my youngest still in the summer sleeps with a humdifier. I would also turn the fan so it isn't blowing on you. but still circulating the air.
