Starting new job tomorrow! Help me get geared up!
I am starting a clerical job tomorrow from 7:30-4:30. I was a teacher, and DH is a teacher, so the hours are fine....just trying to get geared up and ready-any tips? I got the job through a temp service but it is indefinite. TIA
Re: Starting new job tomorrow! Help me get geared up!
Are you interested in the type of work the company does? If so, have your resume ready to hand out. We have an admin temp (recent college grad so not what he wants to do) that's filling in for an admin that's out for surgery, and he is a MILLION times better than the guy that's out. It took him 2 months to reach out to me and ask me about job opportunities for what he wants to do. I connected him to the right people for the type of work he wants to do, but he's not going to be around to make an impression much longer. Be ready to get in early.
Also, your reputation is important. Try to psyche yourself up to do a phenominal job at seemingly menial tasks-if you do a better job than the person you're temping for, it won't go unnoticed.
Thanks-the person there before me was also a temp-she left bc she got a job somewhere else.
Should I ask about permanant work right away? What would a good window of time be to ask?
They're bringing you in as a temp for a reason. Maybe they want to try people out. Maybe they're afraid there will be ebbs and flows in the business and they might have to let the position go. In any event, asking right away seems very pushy -- if they wanted to hire permanently from the get go, they would have. GIve it time so that you can figure out if you want to be there and they can figure out if they want you there.
My best advice is to go into committing that this is where you WANT to be and this is the job you WANT to do. Given that you've come from a different profession, sometimes people will switch and feel that their new role is somehow settling or beneath them or a compromise they had to make in life. That kind of stuff SHOWS. Even if you feel that way, do your best to act like you don't. That will go a long way for anyone making a career transition to something that may not have been their first choice.
Good luck!
