Garage sale question

So, as I mentioned, DH and I are moving soonish and with the moving and the packing comes the Getting Rid of Crap. Granted, some if it is pretty nice Crap, like two patio sets that we don't need at the new house, some DVDs that I've grown out of, electronics and other odds and ends - books, yarn, bags, cookware, gadgets, etc. I know I want to try to sell some of this stuff and I'm wrestling with either listing it on Craigslist (and then dealing with the subsequent back and forth and flakiness of buyers) or having a garage sale. But I'm not sure we have enough for a garage sale. Thoughts, Nesties? I haven't had a garage sale since I was like ten. How useful are they?

Re: Garage sale question

  • It's been my garage sale experience that shoppers are mainly looking for dirt cheap stuff.  In every garage sale I've had/helped at, people have asked about baby stuff, even if it wasn't in the ad.  Clothes (for all ages) seem to be pretty popular, as well as housewares.  For some reason, I've never had any luck selling books, CDs or DVDs at a garage sale.

I would think a garage sale might be less hassle (get rid of everything at once, donate whatever's left) than dealing with craigslist, but I think the $$ you make will be lower.

ditto.  I had a lady haggling me over 50 cents for a pair of shoes once - I told her $1, she said .50, I said no, she threw them back in the pile and walked away.

    wench.

Ugh. Okay. I don't like haggling. I also don't like having to create a gazillion ads for all the stuff I'd put on Craigslist. I do, on the other hand, like money. Is there a solution I'm overlooking?

I've seen on craigslist how people will post "moving sale" or something like that and then list everything that they have in one ad.  You could do that.  I always open those posts to see what is in them.

On another note, DH and I are looking for a patio set.  DH is being picky but if you want to shoot me an email with what you have and what you want for it, we may be interested.  :-) mandylou2004 at yahoo dot com

  • Wow... um... That's a great headline. I thought about doing some kind of virtual garage sale. List everything in an ad and just do break out ads for the big stuff. But that seems like it could get crazy, too, which is why I was considering the real live garage sale.

And of course, Nesties will get first choice. I'll take pictures this weekend and send you guys an email.

Okay, now does anyone need a iPhone (1st gen, it's vintage!) or a macbook? 'Cause those are our other big items...

  • you could sell the high ticket items on craigslist, the other stuff at a garage sale.  I know it's a PITA, but you'd be surprised at how quickly those quarters add up!  we made about $500 at ours a few years ago and most of the stuff sold for less than $1.  yes, we had a tonofshit.

  • I think it depends on how much stuff you have.  If you don't have very many big items, or not a ton of stuff - ppl will just drive right by your garage sale without stopping.  its wierd like that.

anything of value $20, I try to sell on Craigslist first.  Now that we've done a few huge garage sales, i dont think we have enough stuff to warrant sitting outside for a few hours to buy our stuff.  i prefer just to document what we're donating and take the tax write off for it.

like pps mentioned before, ppl come to garage sales to find lawn eqpt, baby clothes, jewelry, furniture.  everything else you're likely to get next to nothing for. . . and they'll haggle you until you pretty much give it away.

  • I need an outside patio set as well.  I'm looking for 6-8 seats, though.

I think garage sales are great.  In 5 hours you can offload tons of crap and walk away w/ some cash.  Even if you just have a driveway full of stuff, people will come.  When it's over, anything less than $30 (or whatever works for you) can go to Goodwill and you're done. Also, little stuff adds up fast in terms of volume.  You could end up getting rid of much more than you realized you even had.

  • We are looking for a patio set too!  Can I get the picture email :)

I totally responded to this thread, in my head at least.  Obvs it didn't make it here and the thought can't really count, but anyways...

Thanks for letting me know!  DH and I want to buy a set sometime, we just haven't committed to the shopping aspect.  Hopefully some day we'll get around to it.

Also, I hope the house sale is going well, or whatever you decided.  Good luck with all of the changes!
