I'm disappointed to say that at 23 I have found three gray hairs and have all of a sudden sprouted acne?My body doesn't know what it wants to do and its so frustrating!
Okay I guess it's not really acne, but since I've been off the pill... my face is a big mess! I have been trying a million different face washes over the past few months and can't really find anything I like. My face is oily but sensitive so it dries out quickly with the wrong kind of face wash. I barely wear makeup in the summer because all I do is work and I don't see anyone but family all day!
Anyone have some recommendations on a good face wash? I just bought St. Ives apricot scrub tonight at Target so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it clears my face!
Thanks in advance!
xoxo Jeannie
Re: Help! Face Wash?
That scrub can be too much for some people, so do use it carefully. I like the Olay Detoxifying Pore Scrub. It is finer so it's more gentle on my skin.
Here is what I have used and I have good skin (finally...)
Clean & Clear continuous control acne cleanser (this is what finally cleared it up) it comes in a purple tube
Purpose
Also spot treat with salicylic acid such as the Clean and Clear Spot treatment and no picking. This hot weather isn't helping us at all, is it!

Ditto Punky about being careful with the St. Ives apricot scrub. I really like the stuff but it is one of the more abrasive exfoliants. When I'm breaking out, I tend to stay away from using it; I think it's too much.
I've simplified my routine a lot and it seems to have helped my face (though currently I also seem to be going through a breakout so take it FWIW
):
Morning: just rinse with water and then use a toner, either the Green Tea toner from The Body Shop or Burt's Bee's toner.
Evening: wash off makeup with liquid Neutrogena. Moisturize with Olay Regenerist (both face and eye products). Apply Rare Minerals acne treatment.
I love the Rare Minerals acne product (by Bare Minerals). Doesn't dry me out like over-the-counter acne products. Also, I just bought a Clarisonic because the ladies on my other local board have been absolutely raving about it and the online reviews are ridiculously good. I just started using it yesterday though so it's too early to make a call on whether it's worth the investment.
I used to have really bad skin in college. I tried ProActiv but it dried my face out so badly and made my face feel wicked sensitive. And I don't know why they recommended twice a day use because that stuff is so abrasive.
It took me a few years going through multiple face washes (Clean and Clear, Nutragena, St. Ives...) before I realized that my face is super sensitive to harsh washes. For the past few months, I've been using a 3-step system of face washes, toners and creams from the Body Shop.
Morning: Aloe Gentle Facial Wash, then Aloe Toner and Aloe day cream.
Night: Aloe Facial Wash (it's a foam, I LOVE it!), Aloe Toner and Aloe exfoliating cream.
I haven't had a serious breakout in months and my face used to be wicked oily but now it's more even and moisturized. And if you get the Body Shop card (like a CVS card), the more times you purchase, you keep getting points that add up to free stuff. I stocked up when they were having a sale and saved about 25 bucks!
GL!
I also have been suffering from acne since coming off the pill....it is awful. I use origins products, and get regular facials.
I keep hoping that once I get pregnant I will get that glowing skin to make up for it.
I have been using AcneFree for a while, which is like ProActiv but you can get it at Target and it costs a lot less. The Step 2 toner in that makes my skin so dry so I don't even use it anymore.
As soon as I run out of Step 1 cleaner I'm going to try something else. Probably something that foams. Our resident PA on my anniversary board mentioned that scrubs often really irriate the skin making you more suseptable to bacteria getting trapped in your pours and thus breakouts.
I also really like the "Terminator" spot treatment stuff that AcneFree sells and will continue to use that when I do break out.
I was actually going to copy her schpeel here!
If you are off the pill because you are TTC then you have to be very carefull of what you use. If you are not, then it is probably the change in your pills/hormones that is causeing your acne. Personally, I have struggled with acne all my life and the best for me is something that doesn't contain salicylic acid. That can be too drying. Murad has a great was that doesn't dry the skin. It's called the "Clarifying Cleanser" and it's available online and at Sephora/Ulta stores and only cost $9 for a trial size. I also have a Clarisonic Brush that I use to exfoliate; it can be expensive, but it's worth every penny
Good Luck!
A few years ago I needed a good product line for my face and my sister, who is an esthetician recommended Dermalogica and I really have liked it. I use the cleansing gel, moisturizer and toner. I also have one of the scrubs that I use twice a week. It's bit expensive, but I don't break out when I use it, so that's a big plus! : )
