SI'er's - what's going on over there??
What's with all the hate crimes? 11 since April, I think?
Is this a big deal over there or is the media playing it up? Tell me what it's like on SI right now, it sounds crazy.
Re: SI'er's - what's going on over there??
I have to disagree.
I'm from Staten Island and its ALWAYS been an issue, however - it is getting a lot worse unfortunately.
That particular neighborhood where its happening is typically lower income - its getting worse.
Its unfortunate and its now time for them to do something.
But WHAT and WHEN?
They are mostly happening in the Port Richmond neighborhood - a neighborhood with a very large Mexican population, and that's the population that has been targeted in these crimes.
I believe it's due to growing unemployment and the distorted belief that the Mexican population is at fault for this high unemployment. There's also growing vigilantism against illegal immigrants and the extreme vigilantes are using this as an excuse to be violent towards the Mexican population even though not everyone who is from Mexico is an illegal immigrant. In fact, I believe some of the victims are here legally. No matter how you feel about illegal immigration, these people don't deserve to be beat up because you suspect them of being here illegally.

My husband and I recently bought a home on the island and are so happy. We're close to the city, but have so much space and great neighbors. I've lived in several different parts of Manhattan and in Queens, and where we live now is, arguably, safer and quieter than many other areas.
Of course, since I don't live in the area where the hate crimes are happening, I can't really say much about that specific area.
