tell me about your cell phone

I'm in the market to upgrade my phone and am trying to decide if I should go for a smartphone or stick with my regular talk/text plan.  Verizon is really pushing the data packages now so there are like 3 phones I can choose from with my current plan that fit my needs (QWERTY keyboard is pretty much my only need).

A smartphone would be a fun upgrade, but is definitely not necessary for me.  I would probably use it most while commuting, to listen to music or watch tv online (and ditch carrying my circa 2005 ipod).

So, what kind of phone do you have?  Do you like it?  If you have a smartphone, do you feel like it is worth the extra fees for the data package?  Feel free to chime in even if you don't have Verizon.  Just wondering what features people like and don't like.

Re: tell me about your cell phone

  • I personally have no need for a phone with internet because I have full capability of internet at work and we don't travel for long periods of time, especially to places that don't have internet access.

I have the enV2. I like it a lot. Battery life is excellent. I like the look of the enV3. They have # buttons on the outside and a QWERTY keyboard inside. DH has the enV Touch (no data package) and it turns off on him all the time (by unlocking itself via the button on the side of the phone while it's in his pocket). He hasn't really had problems with the touch feature, but he is very frustrated with it turning off all the time.

I would LOVE to have a droid and am due for an upgrade but don't want to pay for the data plan. It would be the most helpful in the market when I am trying to figure out a recipe and that's really the only time I need it.

I have an iTouch (free wireless internet where available) but it doesn't get wireless at the grocery store.

I am waiting to upgrade my phone until it breaks (currently have env2)-- the price difference in plans vs. the upgrade isn't worth it at this time.

  • I have the enV2 now too!  How funny.  I do have problems with it turning off for no reason when I have it in my pocket or purse sometimes, which is why I want to get a new phone sooner than later.  I would just upgrade to the enV3 but that requires a $10 data plan, and it's not even unlimited, so that just seems like a tax on getting the newer model.  So annoying.  I'd rather pay the full $30 and go all the way to a fancy phone if I am going to be paying for internet anyway.

Mesa, I have been eyeing the itouch for awhile now, thinking about what I would do if my ipod were to die.  So I was thinking getting a smartphone would eliminate the need to replace my ipod.  I feel like I am just trying to justify spending the extra money though.

  • Hey there!  I have the Devour through Verizon which is an Android phone.  It is horrible. The battery never lasts and the phone randomly shuts off even though I have adjusted the settings so it won't do that.  It also recently de-activated by itself and I lost all my contacts. My sister has the same phone and she had some many issues with it that she had to get a new one.  Very annoying :(

This is my first phone with a data plan which is great but very expensive.  I use it mostly for checking emails etc.

That sucks! I didn't know that. Totally lame. I'd due for new every 2 but DH's isn't until next year so I'm just gonna wait. I've never had a problem with my enV2 turning off and the battery is still good so I figure it won't hurt waiting.

My env2 shuts off too... my BIL works for Verizon so I asked him and he said that it might need a software update but I never did it and doubt it has anything to do with that because both DH & I push on the back of our phones and it turns off so it's more to do with the battery.

It's frustrating but I'm putting up with it for right now! AND DH got me the iTouch to eliminate the need for the smartphone but it hasn't really!

  • It is 100 years old. It's one of the original AT&T blackberries. I finally upgraded from my tiny Samsung flip phone that I got 50 years ago. Before that, i was using my hugeassed Nokia that I got in college. Seriously.

I need a new one. DH wants to get me an Iphone for my birthday but it seems so excessive and swanky. I don't need anything swanky. I keep cell phones for 20 years and it is a huge process for me to get a new one because I have to relearn how to use it and it causes me all kinds of frustration.

With that said, I do need a new one. I may just get a basic blackberry like what I have for work. My criteria is that it has to be lightweight and user friendly or I am not using it. Oh, and I need to be able to hear out of it. That is a problem with a lot of cell phones for me.

  • I just got a Samsung Intercept.  It is an Android phone.  I really like it.  We moved over from Verizon to Sprint because the deal was good.  The phones were actually free and we have the $69 a month package for unlimited data.  DH needed his for work (they reimburse at his new company...his old company bought his phone and so he needs to turn it in) and so I ended up getting a new phone too.
  • I am absolutely useless in this topic (as well as in many other things), because I am an iPhone whoooooooooooooore.  That's right.  I've had 5.  It's the best phone I've ever had, and I couldn't imagine using anything else.  (Then why did you have FIVE?!)  (Fangirl incoming, feel free to skip.)

I bought the first one, and loved it.  I bought the second one (3G) when it came out (stood in line, like a tool).  I decided I didn't like my black one and wanted the white one, so I bought it... 3 months before the 3GS came out (so I couldn't buy the new one- sad).  There was a fault in the plastic backing, so I took it back to Apple, and they handed me a new one, which is the one I had the longest.  I dropped it on the ground a few times, and it bounced around, and I may have slammed a couple purses around too.  I kept it in my pocket, so it got sat on all the time, and was fine.  I dropped it in the tub, twice, and in the sink once, and then dropped it on the driveway a few times, and ran over it with my car.  (Not realizing I had dropped it.)  After all this... it still worked.  About six months after its last traumatic accident, the bluetooth, wifi, and GPS signals stopped working, but the 3G data still worked fine, including text and internet, and my calls were crystal clear.  The screen worked great, despite the huge cracks, and so did the camera.  I replaced it with iPhone 4 in June, and I am continually surprised by how much more I love each one.

  • Thanks for the input, everyone.  I think I am leaning toward the Motorolla Droid if I do upgrade to a smartphone.

I got a Droid Saturday :) It is on back order so I won't get it until next week. I got the one with the touch screen on the phone, not the keyboard that flips out from under it.

Oh, very exciting!  I hope you like it.  I am looking at the older version since I can't handle the touchscreen keyboard.  I tried my sister's Blackberry Storm this weekend and it was just not right for me.

  • I'm weighing in a little late on this, but like Rynna I'm one of those people who loves her iPhone (maybe a little too much).  Both DH and I have one, and we both love them.  He gets a 15% discount on the plan through his company.

Originally he got his because he's in the medical field and needed quick references to all of those big fancy medical publications.  I love mine, when I took the T I read the NY times/Washington Post and listened to NPR, its been surprisingly helpful when traveling too.  I also love how organized I can keep things, and how it syncs to my iCal automatically.  I use the apps a lot more than I thought I would.

Bottom line:  I'm just about always pro-smart phone
