What should we wear blueberry picking?

DS and I are going with MIL this morning. The organic place (not open today) said to wear long pants, sleeves, and closed shoes. It's HOT today though, and I don't want to fry (or DS to get too hot and cranky). I've never been picking before--is it really that dirty/buggy that we'd want to be covered, even if it's so hot? TIA.

Re: What should we wear blueberry picking?

  • I've never been blueberry picking, but my parents took us strawberry picking every summer when I was little and we always wore regular shorts/t-shirts and sunscreen.  Its easier to get stains off skin than out of clothes! Closed toe shoes are probably good b/c if they have an irrigation system the ground could be a little soft.   Not sure about the bugs, but it will be hot for sure and only maybe buggy, so I'd go with shorts/short sleeves.

Have fun and take some pics to share!

  • I don't recall it ever being buggy when we went.  Tennis shoes are a must, since the ground could be a bit muddy, or you'll end up stepping on a bunch of fallen blueberries.  I don't think long sleeve shirts are a must, but pants may be preferred.
  • Do blueberry bushes have pickers like raspberry and blackberry bushes?  Maybe that's why they recommend long pants and sleeves so that you don't get scratched up?

I don't know, I don't think I've ever seen a blueberry bush before.  Just guessing though.

  • When I went last year, I wore a sundress... I don't remember getting pricked or scratched up at all. And it wasn't buggy (which is saying a lot coming from me, as I get eaten alive by mosquitoes). Have fun! I love blueberry picking!
