Johnson Grass

Please tell me there is an easy way to get rid of this.  We did the whole round up thing on it once (which killed the grass around it).  However, when we moved in to this house there were a bazillion dead spots in the yard.  Now, those dead spots are filled with half St. Augustine grass and half Johnson grass.  Is there any way to kill the johnson grass without killing everything else around it or without having to dig it up and making more holes in the yard?  I seriously can't win with this yard.  I would give anything to win the lottery and re-sod the whole thing.

Re: Johnson Grass

  • We have a TON of it too.  We've been told the only way to get rid of it right now is to dig it all up, which for us would be over half our yard.  But sometimes around the end of September I think it was there is a mix of like cornmeal and something else that you can sprinkle in your grass that will stop the seeds from germinating for the next year.  Ask someone at a gardening center at Lowes or Home Depot for what exactly you have to put in your yard and the time frame because I don't remember it 100%.  But that is what we are going to be trying this time around.

  • we have been dealing with this as well. the st.augustine will choke it out once it starts growing in, for now we are just pulling it out before we mow. tons of fun! :)

  • I HATE weeds!! Why is it that they thrive while the grass doesn't. We have Johnson Grass as well but I never knew what it was called. The first couple years at our house we would spend hours pulling weeds. The weeds were winning. This year we hired Scott's. I have actually been happy and our weeds have lessened. I can also call them when I'm not happy with the progress and they'll come out and do a special treatment. I'm about to call them because we still have Johnson grass in the area between the sidewalk and the street. It cost us 240 for the year but so far it's been good. We have not had to pull weeds all year.
