would you loan your vehicle to a friend

a friend of mine is taking her 5 kids on vacation and asked me if i would switch vehicles with them for a week and let them take my van.  instead of them renting a van and paying so much $$$.  i know her family well, not worried about them hurting my van, and she said she'd pay me something for the miles and usage.  i'm buying the van when the lease is up so miles technically aren't an issue (i'm so over on them now anyway).

would you worry about the liability?  would their insurance cover them driving my vehicle?  i believe my insurance covers anyone driving my vehicle.

would YOU do this if a friend asked?  my first feeling is yes i want to help them out, but i think i make bad judgement calls sometimes because i always want to help someone out lol...

Re: would you loan your vehicle to a friend

  • I would have never asked someone this, no matter how good a friend they are.  This is the kind of thing that can ruin a friendship if something were to happen.

My first instinct when I read this was NO WAY, no matter how great of friend they are.  I wouldn't do it.

  • I wouldn't loan my vehicle to a friend...especially not for a vacation.  Nor would I ask a friend to loan me a vehicle for a vacation.  Even if you are considering...you're best bet is to make a call to your insurance agent.

  • Even if they could prove to you that their insurance policy covers driving your vehicle, I wouldn't, not for a week long vacation.

I would, but for only a day and only if it was an emergency or a special even (i.e. wedding or kids school dance..etc) and they would have to be a really good friend, one that I trusted.

Did you friend just plan on taking your van all along and just ask you right before they are supposed to go on this vacation?  If so, that would really tick me off!

You sound just like me!!   My first feeling would also be yes, do it to help them out.  But then I think about what J would say (he's the more logical one, lol) and I'm sure that would be a resounding "Helllll no!" so I'm going to go with no, I wouldn't do it. :)

hmm I didn't think about that... I hope not.  they're used to driving two cars everywhere because of all the kids but now they're thinking it would be easier to take one vehicle.  They'd never fit all their stuff in my van though with using all the seats, so I don't think it would work anyways.

Merin, I was curious what you'd think because I thought you'd have similar thoughts as me!  But yeah, after seeing the responses and I asked my mom too, I'm telling her no for sure.

    THANKS!

  • I guess I'm the oddball and if she was a very good friend I would. I know when I was younger my friend and I switched cars for a week b/c of a vacation. We let my sister and her 5 kids use our Durango when she went on vacation to TN two years ago.
  • I'm with Kel and probably would too, especially if they were good friends of ours.  I would definitely do it if it were family you know? As long as they pay for all the gas or anything that goes wrong and I didn't need it.  We've done this before with my brother's truck while we moved.

Personally myself, I'd would just rent, but that is me.

  • I would for a day, but not for a week, so many things can happen over the course of a week with a vehicle and 5 kids.  I would offer suggestions on where to rent/coupons etc for rental.

  • For a day or two, yes.  But for a week, and they are on vacation in a city where they don't know all the streets and traffic laws?  No.

And yeah, I would never ask someone if I can borrow their car for a week for a vacation.

I've been loaning my car to a co-worker since April.  He drives it to and from work and I know he'll take good care of it.  It was sitting in my garage over the winter and then the battery died because I didn't start it enough.  Now it drives everyday while we try to sell it...*sigh*.
