neighbor's dog barking...help!
Almost every day and night the neighbor directly across the street from me keeps their dog in a hard dog carrier outside on their driveway. When the dog is outside it barks all day and night. It doesn't happen every day but last night it interrupted my sleep a few times. This has been going on for a few months and I need help with writing a "nice" but direct email to my neighbors telling them how disturbing it is. Thanks!
PS - I feel really bad for this dog. It has been in the mid 90s every day and last night there was a big rain storm. I don't know much about dogs but it seem kind of cruel.
Re: neighbor's dog barking...help!
Ditto Meredith. What they are doing IS cruel, and it needs to be stopped immediately, for the sake of that poor dog. I can't believe they leave the dog in a crate in the driveway, where it could be stolen! I would report it to animal control.
Hopefully Amy will chime in with some better tips.

I agree with this 100%. The dog is barking because it is stressed out, hot, too confined, etc. It is really cruel to leave a dog crated outside in the manner that they are for hours on end. Unfortunately, in the eyes of the law, I am not sure they are technically breaking any laws. It is acceptable by county standards to have an outdoor dog, as long as they are properly contained and have shelter. I would argue that in this heat, it isn't safe and is cruel. Animal control can issue a citation to them for the barking b/c that is considered a noise violation. I would suggest calling animal control to explain the situation and see if they are violating any laws. I would then go over to their house and express your concern for the dog's health/safety and your concern over the barking. If that doesn't change things, call animal control and see if they'll go over there.
I hate to say it, but if they think its acceptable to leave their dog out like that, chances are a concerned neighbor isn't going to make them change their ways. Obviously, they don't need a dog.
I might be totally off the mark but I wanted to chime in just in case I'm not
I was accidentially the A-hole with the barking dog and I had NO IDEA about it until a neighbor finally left me a note. I'd put our dog outisde in an open crate in the breezeway between our carport and our house whenever I left the house to run errands (a few hours maybe, not all day) or out to dinner sometimes and apparently he would bark the entire time. Like from the second I pulled out of the driveway until the second I got back home. I honest to God had no idea he was barking like that. I wish the grouchy lady across the street would have said something to me sooner than later because I totally changed how we left him once I knew it was a problem. I felt like such a jerk because I HATE listening to a barking dog.
