Q: What does your company/department do to "go green"?

Just trying to gather more ideas/suggestions to help our dept but am stumped, and wanted to reach out and ask you what your company/dept does to "go green"?

Re: Q: What does your company/department do to "go green"?

  • We have no cups at the coffee makers or water machines (you need to bring you own reusable cup).  At lunch meetings, no drinks in bottles are provided.  Our printers auto default to printing on both sides.
  • Our campus is run on 100% wind power, we have auto-shut off sensors on every light, we have energy efficient printers, have a bum-a-bike program to reduce commuting by car, and have planted enough plants to be considered a botanical garden. We're very green.

  • We have solar windows to provide us energy. We revamped our product (we're a internet/TV/Phone provider) to use less energy, especially when not in use. We encourage riding bikes to work and we pay for the bike if you plan to ride it over 50% of the year. We offer choice parking spots for those with ecofriendly cars.
  • No cups at the coffee/water dispensers as well.  Every department has a certain number of recycling bins (just about 1 at every desk) to toss in paper and cardboard.  We have a large bin for soda cans/bottles.  Energy efficient lights.

And, we have an option to set the main program we use to a "VA" printer, which doesn't actually print anything (what is supposed to print by default just sits in a personal que), but we can just open that printing que and select to print if need be.  This actually cut down on a lot of unnecessary paperwork being printed around the company.

  • We do provide some disposable products but the ones we provide are all compostable. We also provide reusable utensils, cups, plates and bowls.

We purchased a carbonated water maker with reusable glass containers so people wouldn't buy/use the bottled stuff. We also installed water filters on all the taps in the break rooms so people would drink water from the tap rather than the bottled stuff.

Everyone has a recycling bin and we have compost bins through the building including in the bathrooms where we have large compost bins and much smaller waste bins.

We do training on recycling and composting annually.

We allow and encourage people who don't have battery recycling in their communities to bring their batteries in to us to add with our recycling.

We have lights on motion detectors and in one of our buildings we installed lights that dim based on how much light is coming in from windows.

We try to use vendors and order products that are green.

Whenever we order transportation (limos, buses, etc.) we go with a company that uses bio-diesel.

We installed bike racks in the basements of our buildings to encourage people to ride their bikes to work.

We offer a pre-tax commuter benefit program to encourage employees to use public transportation.

We installed low flow toilets and urinals, sinks with sensors and these high tech hand dryers (this really cut down on the amount of paper we use in the bathrooms).

We try and encourage people to go paperless as much as possible, so anyone who request a scanner has received one if they try to go paperless and we've given people who take a lot of notes ipads (for testing) to see if that cuts down on the amount of paper used for notes.

The company will only purchase refillable pens because the refills generate less waste than buying a whole new pen.

  • My employer is a little behind-the-times in terms of eco-friendly practices.  But some things we have done are:

-Online publications only (no print distribution of our products)

-Allow flexible work schedules, to work from home on high ozone days or work a 4/10 schedule (to decrease commuting)

-Arrange with our office supply vendor to use only recyclable packaging materials (no more peanuts or plastic bubbles)

  • Our building is Leed Certified and they have made an intiative to print less and recycle. All the building lights are motion sensors which turn off after no activitity including in the offices. What is really funny is one of my managers motion sensor is in a corner of his office and doesn't pick him up moving in his chair. Needless to say his office light goes off a lot. :D
