What's Your Experience With Acupuncture?

I'm going today for back pain that's become pretty unbearable.  I'm not nervous, but I'm curious about others' experiences.

Re: What's Your Experience With Acupuncture?

  • One of my closest friends and I were just talking about this. She was telling me she'd started going to a new chiropractor who was also a sports medicine doctor and a licensed acupuncturist - and he totally cleared up her back pains through a mix of the 3 techniques.

My aunt goes to one to deal with the pain she suffers as a result of a brain tumor she got in the early 90's. Apparently it's the only thing that helps ease the pain. So, I think it's certainly an avenue worth looking in to.

Have you tried a sports medicine doctor at all?

  • I have never gone, but always wanted to.  My insurance doesn't cover it so I have never have had an opportunity to do it myself.  My friend actually gets this done and she swears by it.  A co-worker of mine goes for neck pain from an earlier car accident and he has had great luck with it.

Good luck girl, hope you feel better soon!

I'm thinking I should.  I've been relying on my chiropractor who has really helped, but the healing time on this bulging disc is so long.  My primary care physician specializes in sports medicine so I think I'll call him today too.

  • Personally I really love it.  I have went for hormonal issues and then for happy labor vibes. My experience could be different than yours will be since I have not went for pain but I love both providers I have went to and the calm office environment were a welcome unwind time.

My sister has went for sleep and anxiety and loves it.  Then we convinced my dad to go for arthritis/pain and he is still learning to love it - he will often report that one thing feels a lot better but then something else hurts but also says that maybe since his back/wrist/etc hurts significantly less that maybe it's just possible that he then feels knee/ankle/eyeball more since that was usually masked by unbearable other pain.  meh. who knows.

I will be interested to hear how it goes!

I have been using accupuncture for years-swear by it-had back surger for burst discs at age 24 and it works wonder for pain management and general well being-keep in mind sometimes it can take several sessions when first starting for it to kick in-i used to go once a week for the first few months (i was an extreme situation) and now maybe go once a month or every other month for tune ups

  • I got an attack of sudden, debilitating, drop you to your knees back pain last Nov.  I'm not sure what caused it (but I have suspicions it was my uber-tugging dog when I took her to an outdoor event).  I was at work when the worst pain hit, so a co-worker suggested I see his chiropractor down the street.  And it was amazing.  After my first treatment, I felt immense relief but I had to go back about once a week for about 6 weeks for all the pain to go completely away and for my back to heal (the practioner said she felt 2 ribs poking out from the center spine, as if slightly detached.  The swelling of my membranes was causing the ribs to not fall back into place and horrid pain).  The treatment, in my non-professional opinion, seemed to help my body facilitate in healing and channel positive energy (and whatever else, endorphins?) to the area.  I think had I seen a traditional dr or just let time heal my injury, I would have also gotten better but would have either had been on some serious pain meds, get a cortizone shot, or some other "treat the symptom but not the problem" solution.  I would do acupuntcure again.

MauiWedding - I'm curious, what's "happy labor" acupuncture?

she stuck me in all the traditional anxiety buster/relaxation points.  She also placed a few in the points known to induce once I hit 39 weeks.  According to my pulses the biggest inhibitor to labor at that point was anxiety (and I was definitely anxious) so that was the main focus.

I was experiencing pre-eclampsia symptoms at 37.5 weeks so that is when I started going.  I went 3 times a week and by 39 weeks my blood pressure was at a normal level and I felt really good.  I went into labor at 39w2day and felt totally calm and ready

  • As I posted previously, I went in to attempt to turn our breech baby.  It didn't work, but overall the whole experience was very relaxing.  As good as a massage!
