Anyone in Fairfax?

Sorry this is random, but I have a tax question that I'm hoping i can get some help with.

I work downtown, and we're currently renting in Mariemont. Mariemont is making me pay income tax to them, even though I pay to Cincinnati. From what I understand, this is actually pretty common in Cincinnati, but previously we lived near UC's campus so I wasn't aware.

We're looking to buy a house, and thinking about Fairfax, but I'm wondering if they have a similar tax structure? Anyone know?

 Thanks!

Re: Anyone in Fairfax?

  • Yes, Fairfax does have an income tax also.  According to this form, it is 1.75%.

  • Cripes, could I have JFGI'ed this? Sorry! And thanks.
  • Yes. Fairfax pays into the Mariemont taxes, so you'll be hit with the same tax structure.

Have you looked at Madison Place?  I used to live in Mariemont, and went to Madison Place for the very same reason.  Well, not exactly, there were other reasons too, but mainly taxes and affordabilty of homes.  I didn't like the homes offered in Fairfax.

  • So you're paying Cincy and Mariemont?   Most people I know who live & work in two areas with income taxes pay their resident tax rate and then the city of the employer gets the remainder, if there is any (or maybe the other way around).  Anyhoo, my mom runs into a funny tax situation with her job-she lives in a township, her employer's office is in the City of Cincy, but her actual work is performed in another township (she's a private duty nurse).  She applies for & gets a refund from the city every year.  Not sure if that helps or not, hope it does!  I hope they both don't insist on you paying both full tax rates.

  • I had a very similar situation happen when I lived in Deer Park years ago.  My house was in DP, but the tax bracket for my street was Silverton.  I HAD to pay the full taxes to Silverton regardless of the fact that I work in Cincinnati city limits.  I had NEVER had this happen before so I called and asked what the deal was and found out later from my tax lady that there are about a handful of municipalities that you have to pay taxes for that you get no credit towards no matter where you work.  Silverton was one of them.  Now I live in Reading and still work in Cincinnati but I don't have to pay Reading taxes b/c Cinti's % is higher. I still have to file w/ Reading every year, but don't owe anything ever.  Hopefully that makes sense.
