San Diego 2010 - LONG

Ok we have been back a week today and how i wish i could bring the weather home with me because it is disgustingly hot! but anyway, here is how the trip went:

Tuesday - flight, and rode a water taxi to Coronado. My 15 year old Godchild came with us and he was awesome the entire trip! It was his first time in an airplane and also his first time in the Pacific Ocean (well, technically San Diego Bay, but whatever). Thats pretty much all we did that day we all fell asleep by like 8:15PM lol.

Wednesday - we started the day by taking the trolley to the Office Depot to make some sketch books and stuff that we didnt get to do at home. By then, our friend Ross had flown in and him and Riley (my Godchild) went walk downtown while I waited with Kody. When we were done, we were walking back to the trolley station and saw a homeless guy pissing on a tree and then like 5 minutes later a homeless guy pissing himself on the trolley. San Diego is really beautiful, but the homeless population grows everytime I go and it is pretty much out of control at this point. I guess if I was homeless, Southern Cal would be the ideal place because the weather is so beautiful, but really they need to do something. Later that afternoon we went get our con badges and while Kody and I had exhibitor badges, Riley only had a pro badge and couldnt get in early, so he and I went to Petco Park and went to the gift shop. They have a place in the giftshop where you can actually go and stand in the stadium. They also do tours, but we were just late for the last one. Next we went to the Hardrock to check out the stuff. After we went wait in the hallway of the convention center until the con opened, but a security guard started to shuffle us out, saw my badge, and let us go in because he is a minor, so Riley got to experience the con with no people which is cool.

At 5:30 they opened the doors to the public. Let me tell you IT WAS CRAZY! I think over the course of the 5 days there were over 130,000 people. Wowzers!

So from Thursday through Sunday, Riley and I walked the con while Kody worked his table. His book has been receiving great reviews and people flocked to his table the entire time. He had alot of meetings with different Hollywood people about his projects and also was interviewed many many times for documentaries, video blogs and the like. He was interviewed by the kid brother of the Jonas brothers lol. We didnt know who it was, but Riley figured it out and as soon as he did little 7 and 8 year old kids started flocking to the table lol.

Our friend Rob (who is studio mates with Kody) shared a table with Kody at the con. Rob is the artist for a book called Chew, which is one of the most popular books right now. Well the writer of Chew (John Layman) was a person featured in a documentary being filmed about SDCC by Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me guy), so the cameras were on us the whole con pretty much. Kody had to sign a few releases, so he will definitely be in the film. My fat butt will be in the background now and then i suppose. This is going to be in the movie theatres sometime next summer, so of course I will remind you to go and see me in the movies lol.

I am really happy that Rob is another local artist because he and his wife April are awesome to hang with and April gives me someone to talk to. And we talk alot and we dont stop lol.

The SDCC is so much fun, but also is very overwhelming because there is so much to see. I saw Ziggy Marley, Brian Poesohn (i dont know how to spell his name, he is on a bunch of tv shows), and met the twin son on the show Hung. Riley saw a few pseudo celebs too. We know and saw quickly Blair Herter from G4 tv (he is from Lafayette), and we met Blair Butler from G4 (who is absolutely beautiful btw). She gave a rave review on her online show for G4 and also showed an original page Kody drew.?

The time flew by and then it was time to come home. Got home and a week later finally feeling recovered from the trip.

Margaritas for all who got through this! Sno-cones for the mommas!?

?

Re: San Diego 2010 - LONG

  • Sounds like you had a great time.  I'm so jealous.  I've wanted to go to the con for years but never have the moneys.  I love Blair Butler, I would have been geeking out to meet her.
  • So will you guys come to the Pittsburgh comicon? ;)  I'll have to find out when that is.  Dave thinks it's usually in April.

And wow I am so jealous, that sounds like so much fun.  And I love San Diego, one of the best places to visit, for sure.

  • Sounds like you had a great time!

i will definitely try to get there! it all depends on the $$ situation at the time. I might try and contact them in a couple of months and see if i can get him there as a special guest so they cover the expenses lol. living off of a teacher salary is hard lol!?

  • Wow!  It sounds like you guys had an awesome weekend!  I'm glad to hear about Kody's sucess too.  That is amazing news. :)
  • Sounds like you had a great trip - I was in SD the previous week and it was HOT as heck. It cooled down the following week you came to visit and I'm sorry but I couldn't coordinate anything to meet up with you that week either. It was my first week back to work since my grandma's passing.

I had so many friends that went to Comic-Con as well - all the pictures kept posting up on their facebooks about everything cool there. I have a friend that works for Blizzard that was there promoting SC2 and all that WOW stuff. Hopefully if you come out again, I'll be more than happy to meet up with you guys!!!

(But IMO, the homeless in SD isn't that bad as you'd think - they have shelters and programs and things going on for them. I think the homeless come out MORE when there are special events/sports games and whatever is going on - it's a better chance for them to get money/donations, too. High traffic areas are perfect scenarios for them.)
