What to do?

I had an interview for a job in June and never heard back from University #1.  I followed up with an email and a phone call. I received an email from the hiring manager apologizing for the silence, she and her wife had a baby an unexpected 6 weeks early.  I can only imagine the chaos.  She then sent me another email asking me for my references.  I sent them and now...nothing.  This was a little over a week ago.

University #2.  I was flown down as the "top" candidate for the position on July 15th.  They told me they had one other candidate but would be done with him on Monday the 19th...and that they would be contacting me by the 23rd.  I have heard nothing.  I sent an email to the hiring manager.  I have had no response.

I leave for vacation tomorrow and essentially go "off the grid" for 8 days (no cell, no email).  What do I do?  Do I call?  Do I email?  Nothing?  I work for a University now and the fall semester is rapidly approaching...this is all getting bunched up...aaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Re: What to do?

  • I would call both and leave a message (if you don't get through to them) saying that you wanted to touch base becasue you're leaving tomorrow and won't have access to cell or email.

  • Contact them both ASAP. Explain that you are going to be OOT and unreachable until X date. Tell them you're still interested in the positions, and hope to be able to talk to them when you return.

Ditto.  I would also set my voice mail to say "I will be out of town and will not have access to voice mail until X date."  Just in case they don't receive your messages, but try to call you, they'll know when they get your voice mail that you're unreachable.

  • Thanks everyone.  Called one...they have hired someone else...waiting to hear on the other.
