I am very new to the gardening, and fear it because I always manage to kill flowers, plants, whatever!
I was told that it is very hard to kill hostas so I decided to give that a try and plant in front of my house. I planted them about 3 weeks ago when it was SUPER hot here in the Detroit, MI area. I was told that since it was so hot in the season that I would have to keep them watered. So, I started to water them about every day!
Come to find out I was killing them with all that water! Ugh! Now what do I do??? Is there any hope for my plants? I can't even get the coral bells I also planted off the ground! My potted flowers started dying as soon as I brought them home! I gave them liquid food on Friday, and that was the last time I watered all of my plants.
What is wise for me to do at this point?
Here are some pics of my poor plants!
Re: I managed to kill it!!! LINK in post
There actually is some hope. I am over in the Mid MI area (Flint/Lansing) and mine look very similar (and have the last couple years due to the heat), so even though they look bad right now- they may actually come back healthier and happier next spring (and then look sickly again by the time we actually get to fall!).
They may actually be getting more sun then they really can tolerate. at least that was what I have been told about mine!
Why are you so sure they were killed by too much water? How do you know? If someone asked me how to kill plants, I'd tell them to spread out black plastic, cut holes in it, and put plants in the holes. It makes the plants MUCH hotter. Really sears them....
I think it's just the heat. My hostas seem to wither earlier and earlier every year, but they still come back the next year.
Also with your coral bells, I think they are getting too much sun. Mine look exactly the same and the leaves are dried to a crisp from the sun, but I dont have anywhere else to plant them so...
IMO you can't really overwater outdoor plants.
EDIT: I just watered my coral bells today and noticed that even though some of the leaves are dried and crunchy, new flower shoots are coming out. I still think you arent watering enough.
And about another post after mine, I didn't read the links, but why on earth isn't there mulch over that plastic? (And why is the plastic there, anyway?)
LOL!
You started a whole argument about mulch an then never used any?!
