Produce question....

I saw in the Crest post below that someone metioned they had quality produce. I shop at either Walmart (because it's right down the road from me) or Target. But neither have stellar quality of produce there. I know I can go on Sat. to the farmer's market but if I was needing to pick up some apples or bananas on Tues. night what would be a great grocery chain to go to? TIA!

Re: Produce question....

  • The Homeland near me usually has good quality produce but the prices can be a bit higher than Crest.  Braum's also has a small produce section, which is where I typically buy bananas.  I know they have apples also, but I've never looked at them because I usually try to buy organic apples.
  • I agree that Crest usually has pretty decent produce. It's not farmer's market quality, but for a grocery store chain it's pretty good. Their prices are decent too.

I would try them since you're not all that far from the one in east Moore, or the new one (SW 104th and May).

  • I am a grocery snob, so we tried virtually every store in Edmond/N OKC when we first moved here.

The quality of produce at the same store in different towns/parts of town vary tremendously. I'm really happy with the Homeland on N Bryant, but we call the Homeland on 33rd "Dirty Homeland." They don't even have close to the same quality and selection of produce. Same thing with Crests'- produce at the Edmond one is OK (though the meat selction is lacking a lot to say the least unless you want to buy Hormel pre-cooked nastiness) but the other Crest we went to (somewhere in N or C OKC- we never went back) was not.

So, if I don't feel like the farmer's market (or want something you can't get there,) I'm happiest for produce at:

    N. Bryant Homeland, Akins, Crescent Market, Edmond Crest, and Forward Foods, not necessarily in that order.

I think this is definitely true, which is why I said, "the Homeland near me." Lol.  The one at 10th & Cornwell/Czech Hall in Yukon (used to be Albertsons) is great, but the one at Mustang and Reno is more the "Dirty Homeland" kind of place.  I like my usual Crest, at Hefner and Rockwell, but I'm not a big fan of the one at 23rd and Meridian (which I'm guessing is the one you went to).  Also, if anyone on the south side of town is looking for organic produce, the Health Food Center at I-240 and Penn. has a good selection.

  • I usually buy produce at SuperTarget because they have a fairly good organic selection (better than most anyway).  Aldi or the Homeland by me is okay too for things that I don't get organic.

I've never even considered buying produce at SuperTarget!  Thanks for this :)
  • Have you tried the Homeland near us? We have pretty good luck there and the prices aren't too unreasonable.

I went by there last night about 8:30 and they had all of their produce covered up. Aren't they opened until 10 or so? But I did buy some from there and had a banana this morning. I think it did taste better then Walmart's.

    Thanks Ladies!
