Is this inappropriate?

A really nice guy in IT is getting married in a month. Someone has sent two company-wide emails telling people they can contribute money and sign a card and they're going to give him the cash at a little office cake eating type gathering. I wouldn't mind so much if this were limited to the department he works in. I just feel like 1) it's not appropriate to infer people not invited to his wedding should feel obligated to contribute, and 2) hello, precedent! What happens when someone less popular gets married? Are we always going to do this? Our company has close to 200 employees. Is this weird or am I just being a stingy biitch?

Re: Is this inappropriate?

  • Weird and annoying.   especially considering you've been working there, what, a month? 2?

  • Things like that bug me.  I'm all for everyone signing a card, but cash is a whole other story.
  • Weird.

We do that within the department, but that's a group of about 20-30 people.  For a group of 200 is setting a precedent that they're not going to be able to follow up on.

  • my job has a monthly party for birthdays and does cards for deaths. anything else should not be company-wide
  • I totally agree it shouldn't be company wide.  The only thing is that IT people usually work with people throughout the company so they wanted to make sure anybody who would be interested in participating could join in.  Maybe?  It still sets a weird precedent.
At my work, you get a party only if you have friends who set it all up for you.  This makes for awkward parties.  I've been here just shy of 5 years and we've had 2.  People have had babies, grandbabies, gotten married, etc. and not so much as a card has been passed around.  It sucks.  I want more parties, damnit.

  • We generally don't do anything for birthdays, but we will do group-specific drinks/gift for life events.  I was actually shocked when I got a very generous gift card from coworkers for the baby.  It would annoy me if it were company wide or if it were someone I don't work with directly.

  • inappropriate.  you are totally right in that it sets a precedent and soon everyone will be asking everyone to contribute to this or that.  If a person was really that close, they'd be invited to the actual baby shower/happy hour/birthday party/funeral etc.
