Where to buy paintings/wall decor?

For those of you who check out the Rue La La site, they have an art sale today and it got me thinking that I still need to decorate the walls in my house, either with some cute wall decor or paintings.  I actually liked a few pieces that I saw online so now I just need to go home and measure. That being said, does anyone have any other recommendations of where to buy nice paintings or decor for your walls?  And I really don't mean this to sound as stuck-up as it's going to, but I'm not talking about Bed, Bath and Beyond or Hobby Lobby.  Not that I don't shop there, because I do, but I guess I just want something that's not mass produced in China.  Thanks!

Re: Where to buy paintings/wall decor?

  • Man, if that's stuck-up, then I'm a big offender, as well. I absolutely do not believe in mass-produced "art" and I will never buy a generic painting that came out of a catalog. When we are able to decorate a home, I plan on painting stuff myself. Have you considered giving that a whirl? It might be kind of fun, and you'll have something that is completely unique that you created yourself. If that doesn't sound appealing, another thought might be etsy.com.
  • I also like the Etsy suggestion.

And I don't know if this falls under the category you're wanting to avoid, but I have bought artwork from www.art.com and www.allposters.com then done the mat/framing myself at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I'm picky about my wall decor (just particular on what I'm looking for), and I love the HUGE selection those websites provide.

    HTH!

  • Thanks for the Etsy suggestion - I never would have thought of that.  I have toyed with the idea of creating something myself, but I certainly do not consider myself an artist and I'd be at square one when it comes to buying supplies.  I do think that would be a fun project however.

The framing idea is good, although I've framed a few things at Hobby Lobby and Pirate's Alley and either I'm too cheap or unimaginative, but my frames always look boring to me.  I feel like I need to take an arts and crafts class or something.

  • I say visit a couple of the local arts festivals.  I have found a photog that takes some cool shots (for my style).  I buy his prints and then take them and have them put in a frame and new mat.

I also think old shops have some cool stuff.  There is one in Edmond on Broadway that is full of stuff that is just redesigned into something different (I can not remember the name for anything right now).

I agree! Although, most of them occur in the spring. There is a winter arts festival in downtown Norman in December that has art for sale. And, I know the different university art programs sometimes have student art sales.

  • I buy Kirkland's, mostly. But, that probably falls under "mass production in China". Although, I've never seen anyone with my wall decor...

I think you need to frame some of your SO's pictures - he takes great pictures - both of you do, actually, and having your own art on your walls would be pretty cool. Also, I have noticed that you all don't have pictures of you all together anywhere in your house....maybe you should have some taken to hang in the entry way or something?

Ooh. This is also a marvelous idea.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!  I've got a lot to think about now!
  • I just remembered last night that this local arts festival is coming up Labor Day weekend, if you want to try that route:
