I love this girl

Heith is gone all week coaching at nationals. I decided that while he was gone, I'd do some major overhauling/organizing of closets, cabinets, and etc.

So I've been looking at websites and videos about organizing. Mostly I've come up with really irritating finds. Like Martha Stewart how to's on cutesy closet decor and "here is a super handy organizing product, but you have to order it from some schmancy expensive website that will take weeks to ship it, if they ship to Canada at all.

So today  I stumbled upon this chick's organizing videos on Youtube. It took me a few seconds to decide if I liked her or found her really annoying-- in the end I decided that she is delightful. I love her personality, and her organizing tips are actually practical and do-able.

While I'm on the topic, if anyone has good organizing advice, I'm all ears. Our condo is about 850 square feet, and keeping the space organized and clutter-free is tough.

Re: I love this girl

  • You just like the way she says "oot" and "aboot".

  • You know me too well.
  • I like the way she says "oot" and "aboot" too. Plus I can relate to her, I'm fat and lazy too.

Can't really help you with organizing tips though, we have lots of space and lots of junk filling it up. On occasion I get motivated watching something like Clean House but that usually fades quickly and I never remember any helpful tips very long.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • she runs a daycare in 900 sf and her husband has a business there too?
  • That is mind boggling to me. I can barely contain two people's crap in our place, which is the same size. No kids or home businesses.

I'm officially going overboard now. I started out wanting to declutter and organize my bedroom closet and the bathroom cabinet, and now I am in the middle of taking measurements in the bedroom, bathroom, laundy room and office/spare bedroom for a complete organization overhaul.

  • Would the garage count as part of the 900 sf? Her husband's business may include a naked woman on a mattress.

  • True.

    And, well played.

My 850 sq feet is an apartment style condo, so does not include any basement/extra storage/garage space.

  • ha irish with the jokes!
  • I bet one of her videos shows how you can save space by using the kids from your day care for your side business of child labor.  Their tiny hands can sew with such detail.

  • I was in a tiny condo before relocating here for work a few years ago. What helped me was having a place for everything. I also made sure that items could be multi purpose. So the unit our TV was on actually was part of our dining room set and held all our platters, wine glasses, entertaining type stuff.

Storage ottomans or benches are your friend. Great as coffee tables and they can hold extra blankets etc.

Make the most of the height.

Buy baskets etc that fit where you want to put them. Don't just buy them because they are on sale/look cute etc etc.

I would personally go room by room and figure out how you want everything organized in that room as if may be different than your plan of attack for another room.

Have functional storage upfront in closets for things you use most often and then put everything else up high or in back.

IKEA has awesome storage solutions for cheap, as does Canadian Tire and Zellers.

  • Thanks J&J. I definitely need to take advantage of the height more. I'm going to get some shelves to go on the walls and some plastic containers to label in the bathroom and laundry room. I also need to get something for the front door to put keys and mail in.

I really wish  I was close to an Ikea. The closest is Calgary. Canadian Tire and Zellers, I can do.

  • They do ship too but I don't know how much shipping would cost.

Mail is a huge sticking point for me. I have a thing to go on the wall that has 2 spots. I never found a way to make it work for how we "do" our mail. When I think about what would work for us it is a spot for new unopened mail, a spot for opened and needs filing, opened and needs action, needs to be read (magazines, catalogues etc). opened, paid and needs filing.

  • Assuming you are talking about ordering wardrobes, shelves, or other heavey storage essentials, shipping with IKEA is uber expensive. Plus, not everything in their store is available online.

    11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!
  • Yeah, I need things that are immediately available, since I'm doing this as a surprise for Heith while he's gone. He'll be back on Sunday, so shipping anything is pretty much out.
  • I think if I surprised Bob with anything that involved cleaning/organizing he might have a heart attack right on the spot.

  • Heith is a clean freak. I'm a generally tidy person, but less anal than he is about it. Doing things like this for him is like standing on a mountaintop and declaring my eternal love. It means a lot to him.
  • Neither of us is a clean freak, but he is definitely the neat one. I'm sure Bob would be thrilled if I did something like that as a permanent solution but usually just looks at me funny when I go on a organizing kick.

  • I actually enjoyed the video, but either her nostrils are wonky or she needs to blow her nose.
