New Neighbor (and a Poll)

I'm intermittently trying to clean up and came across some of our move in paperwork. Among the other info we received our evacuation info from the nearby nuclear plant. I grew up in this area and on a clear day have always been able to see the plume of steam from the cooling tower, but now we officially live inside the 10 mile evacuation zone. While it doesn't bother me, I always wonder how other people feel about living near these plants.

How would you feel about living near a nuclear plant? Would it affect your decision to rent/buy a home in an otherwise desirable area?

Re: New Neighbor (and a Poll)

  • I think it would bother me -- most likely because I know next to nothing about nuclear power so I would definitely not want to be as close as the evacuation zone.
  • I don't think I would feel comfortable living close to a nuclear plant--or really any large plant. It makes me nervous.

ETA: This is probably directly related to my involvement in a class action lawsuit against Monsanto. When I was little, I lived fairly close to the plant and it was discovered that in the 70s they were dumping waste that contained pcbs into the water.

  • I keep going back and forth.

There's a nuclear plant near where I live, but it's a good 35 miles from my actual house. I drive by it a lot (it's on the road to Disneyland!), but I've never really given it much thought. It's always been "eh, it's there, whatever."

However, I just recently rewatched Erin Brockovich and it's got me all skeeved out...

That's what this made me think of too

  • We have one near us. Like SBS it wasn't close to us and I always just saw the plumes and thought all right whatever. I never lived close enough to it growing up until now when I moved in to DH's house. Now with Ayden I am a little more concerned. We know the evacuation plan and have our iodine pills. We also are hoping to move in next year farther away from it. We are just inside the 10 mile radius so a couple streets west and we wouldn't be in the danger zone.

I am amazed by the people that live in the city it is in. They get free cable just for living there. Like that makes up for it if something were to happen?

  • I live near Harrisburg, PA, and Three Mile Island is here. TMI had a partial meltdown in the 70's but I think things have been ok since then. I don't know if I'd move next door to the plant, but I don't have any concerns being 10 miles away

  • Honestly it would bother me very little.  Nuclear plants have so many safeguards and shut down abilities that the risk is low.

In fact, I would feel far better living near a nuclear plant than a coal plant or oil refinery.

  • While I wouldn't purposely seek out a nuke plant, I wouldn't shy away from one either.  I grew up maybe 20 miles from one and a lot of my friends parents work(ed) at them.   Currently my MIL and my BFFs husband still do and my DH is also in the nuke industry (albeit the military side).  Its not the unknown to me and I know there are a lot of safeguards and certifications involved.

I do environmental work for a living.  I'm the one typically out there collecting the soil or water samples.  I can tell you that I'd for sure have a bigger issue living next to Monsato, Love Canal, a municipal landfill or a coal plant.

  • We currently live in a city that has a slew of industrial plants (about 3 miles from our house) they range from chemical plants, steel mills, etc, the majority being chemical plants, often there are times when we are told to turn off all are conditioning, close windows etc. we hate it.. it is very nerve racking. We are (if all goes well) moving to a city (great place to live and also where i work) about 20 minutes from where we are now, but that has a gaseous diffusion plant, also involving gases, radiation etc, not happy about either one of them, the new house is located almost directed between the two areas so we will be further from anything but directly between the two places.. but we have sort of gotten used to the idea of them.. we have tons of family that work in both areas, live near them and everything.. we dont like it but its where we want to live so we deal with it.
