Class Poll

Since KB mentioned classes, I though I would throw out a question for you all.

What's the most memorable class you've ever taken?

Re: Class Poll

  • I had a class in graduate school where I was the only one enrolled.  It was akward to just have the professor lecture to me for 2 hours straight (and I couldn't space out either since I was the only one there).

But I took an art history class in undergrad that I loved.  It was so relaxing to sit in a dark room and listen to her tell stories about pieces of art.

  • I adored the micro class I just took. It was very nursing centered rather than general micro so that's probably why. I also loved my women's history classes in undergrad, specifically American Women to 1900.

  • I rarely took the same professor twice in undergrad. In fact, I only did it twice. My freshman lit prof sparked an interest in James Joyce for me, so I took a conference course (i.e. a class he made up last minute that had about 7 of us hand-chosen students in it) one semester that was all Joyce, all the time. I loved it!

Then I took another prof for Elizabethan prose and poetry and I really liked her, so when I needed an interdisciplinary class and she offered Women Mystery Writers, I jumped at it! It was pretty much the only lit course I took that wasn't based on Brit Lit, and I actually really enjoyed it despite my aversion to the non-classics.

Those two profs alone made me seriously consider going back for a Masters.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I loved all my grad classes but I had 2 undergrad classes that really stood out: Flower Arranging (seriously, I loved it) and Social Problems. The SOC class was basically this old guy that told us stories about his life. People cried every week and the last class, he got a standing ovation from 300 students. It was insane.
  • OMG I can't believe I forgot my social psychology class but Keb reminded me. It was taught by a HUGE 6'4" ex-Navy Seal. He came to every class ready to perform lecture, I kid you not. Woe to the student who dared to walk in late because he would eat you alive for interrupting him. I could have listened to him all day long though. The last day he told the story of his parents, including when they passed away and he choked up talking about them. Everyone in the auditorium was in tears and we all stood and applauded afterward.

  • Oh now that we have a new laptop I'll be able to participate more!

You all will think I'm crazy, but one of the best classes I took was gross anatomy.  My professor was amazing (and good looking to boot).  The way he taught the course was excellent, not to mention I love the biological sciences.  We worked on cadavers in the lab and it was amazing.  I learned so much in that course and still apply the knowledge on a day to day basis.

  • Is it bad that the only classes I remember being really good were because I had a fun teacher or a really good group/team?  Never about the actual class and what we were learning.  There are several when I remember the professor but am really vague on what class it actually was.  I'm not really sure how I got good grades in college considering how little I must have paid attention.
  • Well, aside from all the ones I took from this one professor I was totally in love with, I'd have to say Human Sexuality. I took it the second quarter of my freshman year and was the only freshman who managed to get into the class. It was offered through the Critical Issues program and every week we had a different guest speaker come in, ranging from anti-abortion activists to sex workers to transvestites to nurses in free clinics. It was mind-blowing for my naiive, virginal 18-year-old self. But I probably learned more real world/real life things in that class than any other class I ever took.

  • American-Foreign Relations.  The prof was so genuinely knowledgeable about the subject and really made us think.  He presented in a way that was easy to listen to and could speak to any event of the last 100 years at a moment's notice.

  • In high school, my senior year Honors English class... lots of self-discovery in that class and I loved it.

Undergrad... Statistics, because it was the first A I *EVER* earned in math, and I worked really, really hard on it.  Also, chemistry because it was one of the first classes I ever took with DH.  :)

Graduate school... hmm... Nothing really stands out to me right now.
