F/U on Sandra's credit card question

I acutally had a quick casual chat w/ DH about this.  I know that ppl save tons of money by using the right cc with the right cash back programs, by selectively using different cards for different purposes.  BUT, isn't there a lot of hassel just to keep track of all your card balances at the end of the day?  What would you suggest to be the "right" number for cc to have on hands?

Re: F/U on Sandra's credit card question

  • yeah, i agree - add on top of that different credit cards running different promotions at different times, it gets to be a lot to keep track of!!

we have 3 bank accounts - joint, his, and mine.  the original thought was that the his and mine are used for "fun" purchases - clothing, etc - anything that's not a household purchase or for "us".  but the lines are really fuzzy here, and everything is very liquid.  at the end of the day, it's all "our money".  i think the only real benefit is to be able to buy gifts for each other on the sly - and that happens very rarely anyhow!

so historically, we each have 2 cards - one shared, and one of our own - and each gets paid out of one of our 3 accounts.  unless it's something like a purchase on amzn, then that goes on my amzn card (which comes out of "my" account).  so like i said, everything is fuzzy anyway.  i certainly don't go moving money around from our joint account back into my account for amzn purchases that MH makes <shrug>.

so...all that being said, i'm thinking of trying to take advantage of all the credit card rebates more, and trying to be more diligent about knowing when to use each one.  but, seeing as MH tends to just use whichever he pulls out of his wallet first anyway, and i can't keep the different rebates straight with only 2 cards right now, i don't know that we'll be very successful!  but i'd like to give it a shot - i feel like we're leaving free money on the table and we should at least put a little effort into it!  i still would probably want no more than 3 or 4 cards between the both of us though!

eta: i do think it's important to have at least 2 cards though, especially when traveling, in case something happens to one card.  but i'm also one of those people who often has only like, $2 cash in her wallet and needs to use credit for a drink at starbucks.
