Ever been on a cruise?

DH and I plan to take a vacation before the end of the year, and we've both never been on a cruise. Are there certain ships/cruise lines that are better than others, or ones to avoid? I'm not sure where we want to go yet, but probably somewhere warm. I've been browsing on Vacations To Go a little to see what's out there.

I want to get all the info available for first-time cruisers so we can make a decision & make sure a cruise would be fun for us, and be educated before we book it. My requirements for this vacation is not to be driving around everywhere and I want to relax. I think DH finally agrees w/me!

Any websites or direction or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

  • We are thinking of a cruise too!!  Never been on one either.

I emailed our travel agent yesterday and she thought Royal Carribbean would be a good fit for us.

  • IMHO-

Book with an agent.  Don't set your dates...(that way you can get the best deal).  But you can go online and find a good deal and fine do that...I just like the attention I get from a personal agent..but that's a choice.

Each line is different for different people.

Carnival is cheapest will have the most kids and the most "party atmosphere".  That said you can still relax and stuff but they have a lot planned out so if you want to do something...you can always find something.  I had a great time on Carnival the few times I've been on Carnival.  You get a lot of bang for your buck.

Royal Caribbean is I've heard a step up from Carnival.  Royal Caribbean is what my parents always choose (unless they find a better deal). The food is better, the staff is better...blah blah but they are more $ then Carnival.

Princess- it's a touch old...at least when i was on it a few years ago.  The ships are beautiful but most of the people who take princess are of an older generation but this was also like 10 years ago so it can change.  The food was great, the staff was awesome and the ships are beautiful but most of the people on the cruise I took over spring break were all over 50.

Holland America -I've heard good things.  I think they have the midnight chocolate bar on each ship which is I've heard TO DIE FOR.

Disney-I've heard good things but lots of kids too

Norweign- I've also heard good things.  I think They are the "freestyle" but whoever is the freestyle is the stupidest things I've ever heard of.  The food in the dining rooms is really really good.  Why would you pay a sh*t ton EXTRA to eat "better" food.  Whatev's not for me.

Other girls have been on more recent then me so prob know more.  My dad owned a travel agency for 10 years but closed in 2006 so most of my info is from my experience working and living with my dad thru high school and college.

  • You can't really go wrong with Royal Caribbean or Carnival.  They offer so many different itineraries and so many options.

  • I have been on 2, all with Carnival.

    3 day to Bahamas

5 day to Jamaica and Grand Caymen

7 day to Progresso, Belize and Costa Maya

IMO, the 5 day is perfect. 3 days I felt rushed, 7 days I was bored. I also think it is best to go between Jan - March. Just b/c it is cold and nasty here and its nice to get away to somewhere warm.

Everyone says that Carnival is a party ship, and I just dont see it. We've looked into going on a RC, but being past cruiser with C, it's hard to pass up the past guest rewards you get.

With that being said, we are going to take our fourth cruise this upcoming winter.
