Dog people...come in.
I grew up with dogs and have wanted one of my own ever since I left home for college. Of course, a tiny dorm or apartment isn't the greatest environment for a dog so I waited to graduate and move to a house.
DH and I started dating and he loves dogs, but doesn't want to deal with house breaking a puppy. He convinced me to wait even longer....and now fast forward 5 years more and I still don't have one 
Obviously we live together, so it has to be a mutual decision, but he won't budge. He says we don't have the time for one right now. I live 15 minutes from home and could come home at lunch to let a puppy out. We don't have any vacations planned for the next 5 months. We're married and "settled." At the risk of sounding spoiled, I want my puppy NOW!!
I found this precious little baby online yesterday....
She's 30 minutes away at a Daschund Farm! It's so unfair. We had to wait to get married, he wants to wait to have kids, and I am just so tired of waiting for everything to be good on his weirdlife time schedule. I believe we're about to get into our first official married fight later this evening.

i completely understand not wanting to wait anymore. DH said he wouldn't object to us getting a dog once we moved into our house, but now that we are there (and have a baby on the way) I just don't think now is the time. So I've pushed back our plans until after this baby is a little older and could actually play with the dog.
Also as with PP, one of my friends just adopted one of the oil spill dogs who was about a year old & the dog is completely trained (house broken & no trouble in the car...though he does think it is a complete riot to TP the house -- as in grab on to the end of the TP in the bathroom & don't let go until the house is completely white! Easy solution though...move TP or shut BR door!) So yea, I vote for a little older shelter dog whether you get one now or even if you decide to wait. I "rescued" my cat & I remind him of it on a regular basis!!

I'm a shelter pet advocate too...that's where I rescued my kitty from three years ago
I volunteer with the Humane Society and check the shelter website regularly, have been HOPING, WISHING, PRAYING a daschund puppy would be put up for adoption. I'm really set on getting one of those!

That dog is adorable! I don't know anyone can look at that photo without saying you have to have it!
... that said, I have never had a puppy. I've only adopted dogs as adults. They were both perfect... perfectly trained. One was so funny. He knew the command "Go to your room". haha, not in a you're punished way, but in a "Nighty-night, bedtime" way. So-o-o, working with dogs that would walk right next to me without a leash and "Go Potty" on command... I don't know a thing about puppies.
Could you foster puppies for your local shelter and see how it fits in for your/your husband's schedules and lifestyles?
I'm trying to be practical... though it is difficult with that cute puppy photo.

LOVE THE MINIS!!! they are so cuddly and loving and the perfect lapdog ever...
My advice if you get a mini though.... DOG INSURANCE!!!!! Titus is our mini doxie and we love him to death but he's had so many back problems and surgery. We probably won't get a doxie again cause grant (DH) gets too stressed out with watching titus go up stairs or play to much etc.
We got our first pup a couple of months after we got married and then another one half a year later, both at my urging (but MH didn't put up a fight at all, so it was a no-brainer once I wanted one). But if you're dedicated to taking care of the pup and convince YH of that, hopefully YH will be okay with getting one since I think he's probably just afraid that he's gonna be stuck with all the grunt work of taking care of the pup since puppies are a lot of work.
I wasn't working at the time that we got our first one and we were able to potty train her super well fairly quickly. Our 2nd pup still now a little over a yr old and finally kinda potty-trained, because we got him to keep the 1st one company while we're working and we weren't able to spend as much time training him as we did with the first. Be prepared to maybe go home more than just for lunch in the beginning because puppies are like babies--they need to go almost all the time =P We were cleaning up after them ALL the time when they were young.
You can also get an older pup (like pps suggested) and the potty-training part would definitely be a lot easier. GL!!
I'm no help because I'm dead set on getting a doxie for our next dog (a loooong time in the future lol) - I'm soooo in love with them! I want to get a boy and name it Oscar so I can sing the Oscar Meyer Weiner song to him. I'm nerdy like that.

hahaha. this is what i was thinking. anyone that owns one should either have at least $1k set aside for back surgery or pet insurance that covers it!!! actually in all honestly i think it's good for any pet owner to set aside a $1k emergency fund for their pets b/c any major event would cost about that much.
my only reservation w/the puppy you mentioned is that you said it comes from a farm...which makes me think of a puppy mill. i'm guessing that if you volunteer at the shelter you'd never buy from a puppy mill though so the only other issue would be your DH! i think if you can convince your DH that you are up for house breaking a puppy, then go ahead and get one! or consider an older puppy like the others said

Noooo puppy mills! This family is from rural America and breeds for fun...they only have one or two litters available between now and Christmas. At least that's what their website says. I might go to check it out this weekend, DH said he would "consider" getting one last night!! My mom and sister both have doxies so I know about the back issues....I found this online and would probably buy something similar if we got one

We just got a long-haired mini-dachsund in January that looks JUST like your picture! We couldn't be more happy with her. Although I am a firm believer and supporter of adopting at shelters, it was so nice to have a puppy that we could train to our standards. We have a 13 year old dachsund/terrier mix and a HUGE male cat so a puppy was probably all they would have allowed in the home!
She just has SO much personality which is what I love about their breed. Super cuddly and snuggly, easy for my daughter to handle. I've heard alot about their back problems but most people that are in the vet. business that I've talked to say keeping their weight down makes a HUGE difference.
Kind of a PITA to potty train as their bladders are SO small plus I was doing it in the DEAD of winter. Not fun going out at 11 pm for the final pee of the night in -20 degrees! She was crated for a full 8 hours when we first got her (3 months old) and did fine. I know that's not ideal and we eased her into it after being home with her for 5 days but she did great and I don't think she ever had an accident in the crate. She's a bit of a chewer but is definitely growing out of that habit.

Secondly, I agree with trying to find a rescue or shelter that has the breed you want...is there a doxie rescue here or in TX? You might look into it or try PetFinder.com
GL! We have two pugs, both gotten as puppies. They were A LOT of work... I will say, it did help us prepare to have our baby!
