Anyone in the Warner Robins?
I know that Warner Robins is not in the Atlanta area, but I didn't see another Georgia board except for this one. I am originally from Stockbridge, but currently living in Colorado. My husband has a job interview today in Warner Robins and it is really looking promising. So we might be moving there. I have never been there and was wondering what are the best areas to live with good schools? The only thing I know is that it is a military town, so any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
Re: Anyone in the Warner Robins?
There are a few Nesties that live in WR now - SunMoonandStars and missgeorgiapeach come to mind. They're not on as much, but they'll likely respond at some point.
I grew up in WR and lived there until I moved to Woodstock 4 yrs ago. I can answer a few of the questions for you. Most of the "newer" development is in the area of Hwy 96 in the southern part of WR and in unincorporated Houston Co. (it's pronounced How-stun not Hyoo-stun). Most people say that the newer areas tend to have the better schools, but really - the majority of the schools in the area are good schools. Just stay out of Bibb County (Macon) and you'll be fine.
There are also tons of apartments to rent first to decide where you'd want to live.
Hi there! Yes, I'm in WR (the locals like to call it Warner Vegas). DH and I moved here a year ago from Florida when he got a job at Robins Air Force Base. Is that where your DH is interviewing? My DH loves working there.
WR is known for having good schools in pretty much all of it, but like any town, there are parts to avoid. I think the nicest parts are the south and the west. We live in west WR and quite like it there.
Yes, it is a military town in the sense that it's more diverse and not dominated by deep-South culture like other middle GA towns like Macon (which is only half an hour north), but it's very civilian-friendly (my biggest concern was that it wouldn't be) In fact, the personnel at RAFB is actually about 65% civilian.
This town is growing FAST. The results from the 2000 census showed the pop. to be about 48K, but estimates for the 2010 census are around 62K. Like Aerorea said, there's lots of new construction, and a lot of it is retail. A new movie theater just opened and there's more to come.
What I like best is that it's safe, quiet and pleasant, with good schools and RE is very affordable. It's easy to get to Macon and Atlanta, and Savannah, the mountains and the beaches are all withing driving distance.
What I don't love: the local media is out of Macon, not Atlanta, and there's not a whole lot to do right here compared to bigger cities. It can get boring at times, but compared to where I used to live the advantages outweigh the drwabacks.
Restaurants are mostly chain and shopping is just basic (at least for now)but there's more in Macon and much more in Atlanta. You can get to almost anywhere ATL in about two hours and the airport in 1.5 hours. Sometimes when we go out, we'll go to Macon if we're bored with WR; we also go to ATL occasionally for a big-city fix.
I work in Macon, which I don't mind because the premises are very secure, but I agree I wouldn't recommend living in most parts of that town.
Any more questions, please feel free to PM me. Welcome to GA!
Good luck to your hubby!
SunMoon&Stars - you're the expert now! I'm so proud! lol
SunMoon&Stars couldn't have said it any better!!!
I feel like I am slacking on my knowledge now and welcoming to the WR peeps. And I have been here longer. Oh well.
mrshenderson - Let us know if you need any recommendations for anything when you get here!
We need to start getting some WR GTGs going now!
I'd love that!
