so depressed-vent

At least I didn't get laid off, but i just got another 10% pay cut.  I am now making what I did when I first started my job in 2006.  And Jay is only working 32 hours a week.  As of now we are going to be bringing home $500 less a month than we were in May.  On top of that we have to buy a new furnace before winter, and we can't put it off, there is no way we can go without a furnace in CO in the winter. I just called and canceled cable.  We are going to cut back on the little fun/going out money that we actually spend.  I was trying to pay off his car early by making extra payments but i have to stop doing that for now.  We live very frugally as it is I just keeping going over the budget and can't figure out where to cut anything.

We want to TTC starting Nov (this is when my current batch of BC runs out).  Jay wants to go ahead and continue this plan but if things don't change we won't be able to afford it.  Daycare in my area is on average $900 a month, and neither of us can afford to quit our jobs.  He is being optimistic but every year it seems to get worse.  But I don't really want to keep waiting to TTC because I'm going to be 32 and so many people I know are struggling to get pregnant and I don't want to keep putting it off.

We've both been looking for new jobs and applying but there is very little out there. I'm so tired of just getting by.

  • I'm really sorry that you are feeling down.  I believe that I would be feeling the same way if I were you.  I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers in hopes that things start looking up for you soon.

  • I'm so sorry.  That really sounds like a lot to deal with.  I think you were smart to cut off the cable and cut some fun spending.  I know it's difficult, but you will get through this.  I really hope this economy starts turning around.  It's already past ridiculous.
  • I'm so sorry Kate. Hugs to you. I know how much you were looking forward to TTC at some point. I wouldn't automatically rule out TTC though. I say sit down with your budget again and draw up a budget for a baby too. Make sure you are looking at some of the online programs where you can input your income and what it would be with different tax withholdings. Also, ask around. You may find daycare cheaper than $900 or find someone who wants to make some extra money by caring for another child. That's my plan if I can't find a part time job after the baby was born and I was frankly planning to charge about $400-500 a month. And since I've lost my job I've been very frugal about buying baby stuff and have gotten some amazing deals and found some great consignment shops.

Either way, I really hope things look up for you guys. I know that you work incredibly hard and it isn't fair to see bad things happen to good people.

  • Oh  Kate, I am so sorry. I know you work so hard and care so much about your students. This sucks! I pray that something good comes your way soon.
  • Jay's mentor Ron, and the only other person who works in his department, must of heard us talking today. (I went into see him during his lunch right after my meeting with my boss) because Ron went to the boss and got Jay reinstated to 40 hours again.  Ron did need Jay to work more, Ron is salary and has been putting in close to 70 hours a week since Jay was cut to 32.  I'm glad Ron cares for Jay.
  • I am soooo sorry!!!!

Sometimes the good always comes out when you least expect it! Thank goodness for Jay's mentor right?

I'm sorry Kate, I'm thinking about you and hope things will turn out better for you two. Hang tough girl! ;-)

Well this is good news.  I'm sorry you're stressed.  I hope things work out for you.
  • I am sorry to hear this. I know first hand how frustrating this can be because my last job decreased salaries across the board for the whole company. I hope things get better. Try to stay positive. And try lurking, or if your brave, post your budget on the money matters board. They are soooo helpful and mostly nice.

I have been lurking there a lot and have gotten a lot of ideas and I thought about posting my budget but its hard because I think we make way less than a lot of people over there (sometimes I hate being a teacher). We are not drowning-no credit card debt and we are still able to save. We live way under or means but there is not a lot of wiggle room in the budget.  I'm mainly sad because we can't pay off the car early and we can't save extra for baby savings and we have some home projects that I would like to do but are not necessary now but when we go to sell will be important.  It's just more frustrating than anything.
