HOA's

Anyone live where there is a HOA?  Is it oppressive? Or does it keep order and junk out of people's yards?  How often do you typically pay fees?

Re: HOA's

  • Ours may be different than what you are looking at b/c it's technically a condo.  We pay over $100 a month and it includes lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, the fitness center, and any repairs outside of our house.  It's increased in price nearly every year that we've been here.  Some of it is nice b/c it keeps the neighborhood looking nice and uniform but other parts are a pain.  The HOA docs are what scared our first buyer off and caused her to back out.  My neighbor had expensive wooden blinds installed and had to cover them since they weren't white/ivory facing her windows.  They have pet restrictions (you can only have 2 unless you move in with more).  We had to pay an extra $30 when we had all that crazy snow this year but usually there aren't extra fees.  We had to apply for permission to have our for sale sign in our mulch and couldn't have the sign in the grass near the street.  Our neighbor is the president of the HOA and he is always watching.

  • We have an HOA and pay $200 a year.  Our HOA is weird....they were all up in arms about someone who installed a mailbox with brick around it that they took them to court for it.  Another guy installed a shed that was apparently not acceptable so there was a fight about that too.  They worry more about the stupid stuff but there are many people here that do not keep up with their properties AT ALL and really should be told about it.  Our neighbor behind is terrible...their house is a dump and they only mow like once a month...their kids run and play in our yard too.  The last HOA meeting was just a shouting match and everyone voted off the entire board.  For the most part, they don't bother you and only get worked up about the little things.
  • We put in an offer in on a house in a development with an HOA tonight - yes we FINALLY have seemed to have sold our house although the ink is not dry yet. (please don't let that be a jinx)

The fee is very reasonable - only $60/year.  From what I can tell it is for up keep of the common/storm water control areas.  These areas are seem to be well kept up, have nice wooden fences around them, are mowed, no weeds. We should be getting the HOA info soon.  I know we won't be able to put up political signs in our yards because I canvassed this neighborhood during the election.  I actually have walked by this house several times never ever thinking we would ever live there (although I think people who live there are from the other party, I think I have talked to them).

The klassy moment of the day was when we go to a house the people were there in the driving way getting ready to leave.  The guy had a beer in his hand, he proceeded to get in his car and drive away.  Seriously.

  • I'm so excited to hear your news!!  I was wondering how things were going.  I was afraid of jinxing our process by posting about it too.  I'll send positive thoughts that this all works out for you.

It sounds like the HOA fee is reasonable.  I hope the info you receive from them is good too.

    Road sodas, eh?  Real klassy!
