My post for the day...it's controversial.

Of course my post for the day is one of controversy.

Hey, at least it may get the board moving.

So, what are your thoughts about the mosque being built at Ground Zero?

  • Not really a fan. I think that spot should be reserved for those who lost their life there.

Hurry!  I've been dying to discuss this with someone but have been swamped at work.

  • Here's the article I read.  Clearly disclosing I only read this article, so if it doesn't include all applicable details, please forgive me.

Honestly, I'm okay with it for 2 main reasons.

1-  It isn't actually at Ground Zero.  It is two blocks north according to the article above which I think puts it more of in the neighborhood of Ground Zero, not at Ground Zero.  I think you get into a very slippery slope saying 2 blocks is too close, but 5 (or 7 or 10 or whatever) is far enough away.

2-  I honestly feel bad for American Muslims.  Because of 9-11 they have seen quite a bit of undue discrimination.  And I'll be the first to admit that when I boarded flights after 9-11, I judged based on physical appearance and secretly wished that he wouldn't be sitting next to me.  So to continue to discriminate against this Muslim mosque 9 years after this incident is uncalled for.  No one would think twice about a Catholic church being put in that spot.  I love America for all of our diversity and we should deliberately work to accept all Americans and stop holding entire groups accountable for a few peoples' actions.

  • My opinions...

I believe it is a spit in the face to all that were involved in 9/11.  This includes the  loved ones that were lost, the families left behind, the many rescuers, the volunteers, all of us that sat stunned staring at the tv that awful morning.

Also, I feel if the mosque truly wanted peace then they would build their site in a different location.

Last but not least, how in THE world did the mosque receive the proper permits, etc to build at ground zero when the church who had been there cannot?  St. Nicholas was destroyed when the towers came down.  They have been trying to rebuild for the past 9 years yet have been given the run around to do so.  Can we say scandal??!

Here's a question because I honestly don't know.  Was the church actually at ground zero?  From what I read, the mosque's location isn't considered a landmark, since it is two blocks away from Ground Zero.  Could the church not be allowed to rebuild because its location might be deemed as a landmark?

I completely hear your opinion and understand your point of view.  But I guess how far is far enough away from Ground Zero?  10 blocks?  Not in Manhattan?  Not in NY?  I think that is where I have a hard time not making rules about what can and can't be allowed in the Ground Zero "vicinity" since everyone will have a different opinion on how to define "vicinity".

  • I'm okay with it. Muslim does not equal terrorism. The people who caused 9/11 were terrorists. They may have said they were acting on behalf of Muslims but many in that faith disagree. To exclude a mosque near the towers site solely on that basis is not only legally discriminatory, it goes against the very foundation of America.

It would be ideal if there was an area near the site where a mosque, synagogue, churches, and other worship houses were standing side-by-side. It would be a strong message that we are different and yet still united.

    This! I completely agree.

    This, exactly.

Thank you for clearly stating what I probably couldn't have. I couldn't agree with this statement more.

    Why does this bother someone?

Terrorism is terrorism whether it is commited in the name of Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, etc. Terrorism in the name of religion is always commited by psychotic whack jobs who take things way out of proportion. Nobody would think twice if this were a Synagogue or a Church... and there have been plenty of terrorist attacks in the name of Christianity (ever heard of the terrorists in Spain? Those dudes are CRAZY).

I would have a problem with this if the mosque were being built directly ON ground zero... which I do believe should be kept as a memorial to those who died. I would also have a problem if they were building a church, synagogue, Buddhist temple, or Sears... because, again, I think it should be a memorial. But the mosque is not going to be built there... it's in close proximity, but not ON ground zero. I don't see an issue other than people being uneducated about the difference between terrorism and the Muslim religion.
