Prop 8 discussion

So, at the risk of opening a can of worms, I would just like to say that I am THRILLED and PROUD to be a resident of California now that it has ruled the ban of same-sex marriage as unconstitutional. I have so many friends and loved ones in long-term, committed relationships who have been unable to express their love in the way we all did some 9+ months ago. How great a world it would be if everyone willing to show such dedication be allowed to do so under the law. YAY!

PS- I know that not everyone shares my enthusiasm, but I completely respect all informed and rational opinions.

Re: Prop 8 discussion

  • YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
  • In my circle of friends are 4 married gay couples.  All of them had to go somewhere else to get married and are not considered married in their own home towns.  Way to go California!  I wish Virginia could be as interested in equality!  Yes
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • SOOOOOOO happy! I was just watching Rachel's coverage (totally betraying my political stripes here) and it made me tear up. Still a long road to full equality, but a big step forward.

  • I was just watching Last Comic Standing this week and I think Myq Kaplan said it best in his set... something like... racist people used to think interracial marriages shouldn't be allowed, they thought "don't let them marry US, make them marry each other!"  Now with gay marriage, people are thinking "don't let them marry each other, make them marry US!  Wait... what?"  Hahaha, it cracked me up.

Well, we kinda already have. I've learned it's so easy to get your medicinal card, it's almost comical! (Note: I don't partake, just noticing a cultural trend.)

  • I have been paying attention to the news less than I've been on here.  Just curious since it didn't pass in the election, how did things change?  I guess I could look it up... I'm just ready to fall asleep already and I'm being lazy.

P.S.  There's a weed shop right by my favorite coffee shop... I hate it.

It'll just be interesting to see what happens, how it's handled, etc. I'm an amused bystander.

  • I think it's great that this has passed in California.  I wish Maine would follow suit.  There's been a very strong push lately, but it just hasn't been getting the votes needed Sad

I agree.  I was really let down with Maine's last vote.

     But hurray for California!

  • So glad for the ruling--let's hope it doesn't get reversed.

This is the thing that bothers me: this is not a state issue.  This is a constitutional issue, and the judge made that very clear in his ruling.  I know the federal govt is staying out of it and has made it a decision for the states in order for the states to be held liable for the outcomes of these votes. The whole situation just pisses me off, and to know that in this day and age discrimiation is still acceptable/legal drives me batty.

    This. Exactly.

  • Very true. For those who wonder how this came about, Prop 8 was indeed passed by election, but 2 lawsuits were brought against the state by a lesbian and gay couple (separately), which is why a federal judge heard the case. Now that he has ruled it unconstitutional, it will be appealed in the state Supreme Court, and then I'm sure the federal after that. It could be a couple of years before all is resolved, but I hope it causes a ripple effect state by state. Maybe the prez will push it through before his term ends (since the way things have been going, his odds of being reelected are looking grim)? Just a thought.

He won't as he doesn't support gay marriage, only civil unions.  Bunk.
