2 kitty cats

Ladies,

Our big cat is just miserable in our new place and we have to find him a new home.  We are also looking for a home for our little cat because our new place isn't big enough for a dog and 2 cats and 2 humans.  Our big kitty is a sweet heart and loves to be held.  We think he is a Maine *** cat.  He really needs to go to a home where he is the only kitty, but he is fine with dogs.  He is 3.

Our little cat is a year old and she is a crazy kitty full of energy.  She definitely needs to go to a home where she has a kitty playmate.  She is orange and white.  She doesn't like to be held, but she will come to you when she wants loving.

If anyone knows anyone that is interested let me know.  Please don't hate me for rehoming them, but this is what we have to do!  Feel free to e-mail jennatwigg @ gmail . com

My only requirement is that they go to good homes, and I would like to see the home.

  • Hi! I live in Fayetteville, and I already have one cat, a male tabby who will be 1 year at the end of this month. We adopted him from FAPS, and he's nuetered and all caught up on shots, etc.Your little girl might make a good companion for him. I need to talk it over with my husband first, and I also understand if you don't want to come this far. But if my husband okays it, i'm interested. Just one question - is she short or long hair? I have allergies, but the short hair doesn't bug them.
  • She's short haired, and she sheds very little...especially compared to the big cat.  She's due to go to the vet this month and I'd take her before she goes to a new home, then she'll be up to date on everything.  She's spayed, no fleas, very healthy.

  • What exactly is it that they don't like about your new home? It took almost 8 months for ours to get acclimated to our new place. And I am sorry, but I don't understand why you need to rehome them.

Same here. We had to restrict access to our bedrooms. Have you tried Feliway? It's a plug in type pheromone which is supposed to have a calming effect on cats.

  • We are renting and we can't afford for the cats to dig up the carpet and pee all over the place.  End of story!

  • So, I talked with my husband, and he reminded me that as soon as he gets back (around this time next year) we are basically packing up and moving again, with the possibility of going overseas. If we do go overseas it will probably mean long and expensive quarantines for any animals we bring over. I would hate to take your kitty and put her through all that stress again (and maybe more) in just another year. However - he did agree that if by the end of this year (when we should know something about where we're going) you still needed to find a home for her, I could take her in.

I wish I could say yes right now, but since he pays the bills I have to let him have a say. I will see if anyone else around here would like her though.

  • How long have you lived in this new location? If you did not think it was large enough for your family, pets included, why did you move there?

What have you done to help them adjust to the move? I see nothing in your posts that would require re-homing. It sounds like you just need to work with them to adjust. It sounds like your biggest concern is the carpet. For now,can you keep them confined to a bathroom/room without carpet while you are away? Do you have enough scratching posts/pads? Is there a specific time a day that they try to tear up the carpet (ex, you lock them out of the bedroom at night, they can't get in, so they tear at the carpet).

  • That's why I suggested the Feliway, it's supposed to help stop behaviors like that. Your cat is stressed, so he's peeing on things. Feliway is meant to soothe cats so they don't engage in stress-motivated activities. I have other suggestions, but it sounds like your mind is made up, so I guess I should just keep my suggestions to myself.  I do remember you mentioning several months ago wanting to re-home so I'm glad that you've at least given it another shot. I just find the explaination of "not enough room" to be disappointing considering you just moved and I would think space for your animals (+ hopeful child) would be a consideration in choosing your new space.

Honestly it's less of a space issue and more of a they ruined the carpet at the last place and I'm afraid they'll do it here.  Ever since we got the little cat (over a year ago) the big cat started doing strange things (pees on the dogs bed, pees in the laundry basket, pees on the bathmat).  DH wants them gone more than me.  They tear at the carpet on the stairs because we don't let them in the bedrooms.  We don't let them in the bedrooms because the big cat pees on everything and the little cat pukes all the time.  There is no carpet downstairs so we prefer to have them downstairs, but the stairs are carpeted and we have no way to block them from being on there.  Our landlord is an older man and is very by the book.  He hates animals and made it quite clear that ANY damage they do we WILL be paying for.

  • I think this is quite sad in general and that you should have considered these possibilities when you moved into your rental. I completely agree with trying Feliway as we now use it and think you could even try a baby gate on the stairs if you don't want them in particular areas of your home. We do this as well so the dogs and cats don't fight.I rarely understand the reasoning for rehoming animals.

I think you should try the Feliway I've heard rave reviews about the difference it can make for pets who are stressed and demonstrating inappropriate behaviors.

How would I have considered them?  I didn't know the cat was going to claw the stairs!  We use a baby gate, but they jump over it and they can climb through the spaces in the side of the stairs.  We have to live somewhre.  We have a great dog that causes no problems and we prefer not to deal with paying mega money when we move out.

Have you considered trying another food? You cat could be allergic to the food you are feeding and that could explain the puking. Have you asked your vet about either of these situations?

  • I understand the frustration. Believe me, I've been there. Countless trips to the vets, hours spent cleaning carpets, even more hours ripping out the carpets and replacing the flooring ourselves. Of course I would have preferred to spend the $ elsewhere, but I feel handling problems like these are what it means to be a pet owner. I feel like adopting a pet is much like marriage...for better or for worse. Heck, one of my cats has a freaking heart condition so we have to spend the $$$ every year to bring her to the kitty cardiologist to get her meds adjusted so she doesn't croak. Anyone who has been around this board for awhile could attest to a period of time where I was always coming on here bitchingabout cat pee. I even had a ticker counting how many days since my cat had peed in my house.  We had on/off problems at least 6 months before we found a balance of kitty litter type, kitty litter size/location, clean floors/restricted access, and medication that works. We had another bout after we got the dog.  Heck, we've been living in our house for 3 1/2 years now and we still have a room gated off b/c the cats peed there and I'm scared they'll start again.  So what gets me about this post is not that you want to get rid of your cats. It's that you seem to think the problem is hopeless and without solution. As for the scratching problem. http://www.softpaws.com/

What if you give the cat up and the cat continues these behaviors at the new place and the new owner is unwilling to work with him? Would you feel OK knowing that person very well could give the cat up to the pound?

  • Terp brings up so very good points.

I was also wondering how many litter boxes you have? Do you have at least one for each cat?
