Does anyone here make their own cheese?
I haven't found rennet in stores, so I'm going to order some online. Does the vegetable rennet work as well as animal rennet?
Twin boys due 7/25/12

I've done it with the veg rennet and it works great! I ordered it from the place in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - www.cheesemaking.com
Have fun!!!
(You're reminding me that I want to make more cheese...yum....)
I got the mozza kit from cheesemaking.com. I haven't done it lately, but it's kind of fun.
Fresh cheese is all I've done - aged cheese takes more equipment and expertise.
I've never even heard of microbial rennet. I called our local healthy markets and none of them carry rennet, so no matter what I'm going to have to buy online. I'll definitely check into it.
I hadn't considered a whole cheese kit! I'll look for those too. Right now I'm just exploring options. My husband is a cheese head and it breaks his little Wisconsin heart that he can't find cheese curds here. If I could make them, I could pretty much ensure life long wedded bliss.
The mozza kit would be perfect for making cheese curds! It comes with rennet, citric acid, and salt. Plus some cheesecloth and a thermometer, I think. It was a good value for everything you get.

I have to get this!!!! it would be so much fun!
It's kind of messy, but even failures taste pretty good.
I really should make another batch.
