Contacting HR about a different position?

I contact the HR department of a fairly large organization last week about a job posting.  After reading the job description I realized I wouldn't be a good fit for it, it requires skills I don't have.  Now there is another position open and it would probably be a much better fit.  Is it going to look bad contacting them about another position only a week later?

Re: Contacting HR about a different position?

  • I don't think so.

I would call and say "Hello HR, I read over the job requirements for the position that I recently applied for as well as your new posting for position X.  I after looking at both job duties and responsibilities I feel I would be your best candidate and a better fit for position X."  Maybe even tell them why you feel this way.

I actually did this with my current position.  I applied for a reviewer position and felt that I would enjoy my job more and be more productive in the role I have now.  After having been offered the job and filling out my paperwork with HR, the manager told me that they were glad I knew my weaknesses and that I could recognize excelling at a different position.
