Pattern Sewing Advice

So I have a sewing machine, and I even took a beginner class to learn how to use my machine . . . but I stopped there.

I wanted to try sewing a few simple dresses with these patterns I got . . . but I have no clue how to start!  Do they offer classes somewhere where I can take in my pattern and walk through it with someone?  It sound silly typing it, but I've opened the envelope to try it twice and I've chickened out.  I hate messing up Embarrassed.

Any ideas?  Anyone/anyplace you recommend?  Most of the places I thought of only offer sewing a specific thing (like a purse or apron or something like that).

Re: Pattern Sewing Advice

  • ACC and Austin School of Fashion Design offer classes. The ASFD is more detailed and have more classes. The ACC is offered through continuing education dept.
  • Just go for it.  If the idea of messing up on expensive fabric intimidates you, then try it with less expensive fabric first.  (Just make sure it's something you would actually wear.)  There are so many great tutorials on youtube and the Crafts board is so full of helpful people, that I think you'll find quick answers if you run into problems.

Page me if you need me.  Good luck and have fun!!

  • Thanks gals!  I'll have to check out ACC and see what they have to offer.  The patterns I have are pretty easy I think.  I just hate wasting my time messing up . . .!
  • I recommend Stitch Lab.  Here's their website: http://www.stitchlab.biz/
